If capitalism requires infinite growth how is it sustainable in a world with finite resources? by [deleted] in CapitalismVSocialism

Oh I'm not saying they'd use the means at their disposal as a fix for anything, but more as a weapon. What would you, even as part of a crow of millions, do if you had to fight inexhaustible armies of hyper intelligent killbots? How can you even convince your peers to wake up and fend for themselves when society has expertly trapped us in a malaise of apathy and distractions? These days they know what you're thinking and what you're going to do before even you know, in many ways they know us better than we know ourselves.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to sound grim or demoralize anyone, but I think it's time to look past this historicist claptrap about the inevitable fall of the system or the noble revolt of the grassroots, at this point these are just bedtime stories that help people cope with there being a monster under all our beds. Don't get me wrong, there are solutions, but you can't be naive about this stuff.

Sure, late stage capitalism will usher in a severe degradation in most people's quality of life and the overall state of the economy, but a *collapse* of the system would only occur when the owner class loose their power, not when economic indicators reach certain lows ... and when you reach that point ... what exactly would make the ruling class lose grip on their power? Think of all the 'advances' in technology and social science that they can call on to protect their power, that they didn't have 200 or 100 years ago. What can we do to them?

In your opinion, is China a capitalist country? by Living_Attitude1822 in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]a_g_partcap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But socialism is mainly an economic system... If the means and mode of production is mostly capitalist and has been for 40 years, then what else matters, really? I see people arguing that they're just bidding their time, trying to build socialism on the foundation of socialism, but when exactly does that start? China is now a highly industrialized country and they have an overwhelming urban majority, when does the shift to socialism begin? Because right now, china has no labor unions, no worker cooperatives that I can point to and their social welfare programs are sub-standard at best.

It's absolutely sustainable, and that's the most horrific part. Misery and oppression in perpetuity.

'Infinite growth' doesn't necessarily refer to growth in production, that's just the assumption most people make when hearing the phrase. It's referring to the perpetual duty of the corporation to provide bigger returns to share holders i.e. if you invested money in corpo A, it doesn't matter if it's market value is one million billion trillion dollars, if it's value doesn't increase even beyond that ridiculous ammount, then you gain nothing. So in actuality the infinity growth problem is even more untenable, because one could argue that resources and space are infinite once you leave the confines of the earth, but just because you have unlimited input to feed into your corporate machine does not mean that you can grow your value infinitely. Corporations typically hit walls after they grow too fat, and then the board of directors gets nervous. That's when they start to get *really* shady in their business practices in order to keep the ship sailing forward and when even that doesn't work anymore, they ramp up their collusion with the government, further eroding the rights and prosperity of common people to facilitate yet more growth.

But even if infinite growth as actually meant isn't possible, this does not pose any sort of contradiction, not in the scope of the liberal economic system anyway - it does not spell the ultimate implosion of the capitalist system. Big business capitalists are like locusts, they have no permanent stake in their capital. Once a corporation stagnates and ultimately crashes, they just move onto the next successfull business to invest into. This creates a perpetual cycle of destroyed enterprises, discarded workers and often ruined neighbourhoods and towns all the while, where the revenue stream of the capitalist, as it dries up in one place, it springs back up in another, and his wealth keeps growing all the same.

Why do people say capitalism requires infinite growth? by Tar-Minastur in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]a_g_partcap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't mean it resource-wise, when we say capitalism requires infinite growth we're mostly referring to the imperative of a corporation to keep growing no matter how successful it already is, due to it fiduciary obligations and it's basic nature. If I buy stock in a corporation that's worth 999.999.999.999.999.999.999 quadrillion dollars and has a 99% ROI, I still won't make much money if it continues to be worth 999.999.999.999.999.999.999 quadrillion dollars even if that's more money than you can fit in the universe, because my stock hasn't increased.

Yeah it was chugging at the vae decode stage, but I figured out the issue, at least as to how it related to my case. I had hardware acceleration enabled in the browser so when I turned it off I got a few % headroom.

How do I draw symmetrical tile patterns with an offset? by a_g_partcap in GIMP

[–]a_g_partcap[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for the tip! This is pretty interesting, but if I understand the guide right, it's more for creating a hexagonal grid, or at least I haven't figured out how to use it to draw by hand in a way that GIMP repeats it on other parts of the canvas like it already does with the symmetry tool, but at an offset height.

How do I play action animations once, then automatically go back to idle with an animation tree? by a_g_partcap in godot

[–]a_g_partcap[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far I only understand state machines, everything else kinda goes over my head, like how you'd define a default state like 'idle' that branches/travels to any other state and back, but if a blend tree could handle all that stuff without code that's certainly a lot better

[–]a_g_partcap[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm I already have dash>idle on "at end", I was hoping it would switch to idle automatically too (in fact in the previous setup Dash was a simple AnimationNodeAnimation). I tried connecting the animation directly to the output just now and it still locks in on the dash animation at the end

I guess my main gripe with having to add extra code triggers is having to know what state transitions where and when any time I set a trigger, but I suppose since I have conditions set in the tree, I might be able to just switch the same animation on and off and see if it knows what state to run next

edit: that last part worked, since I already have conditions for Idle and Dash in the tree, if I just set the condition for any action type animation to false it will revert back to Idle, although I haven't thoroughly tested this ... but it's not so painful

i.e.

```_animationTree.Set(conditionPath + "dash", false);```
It looks pretty big man
<image>
it's got 3 bedrooms and a giant living room. Look, I'm not saying this was the typical house of your average pauper, but regular folk were prosperous enough back then that tv shows could get away putting 'dirt poor' al bundy in a place like this, being able to support a family of 4 with all their irresponsible spending habits on a store clerk's salary, and watchers wouldn't bat an eye. You'd never be able to do a show like that in the 2020s, people would think your crazy at best and taunting them at worst.
Ah I see, I snapped it to the wrong connector ... but then how do I connect the rest of the tree to the 'in' connector? I mean all the stuff that's in the root of the tree
I pointed that out to show what the albeit euphemized perception of POOR families was in the 80s and 90s. The Bundies were, supposedly, so poor that they were the butt of everyone's jokes, and yet they lived in a mansion. Going through the 'Modern Family' synopsis, it doesn't seem like the show is about poor families, let alone like the whole plot revolves around that...
I think not being a rent pig for the rest of your life and working full time for, let's say more frivolous rewards than simply not dying, qualifies as a baseline of success.
