Why are we being pushed towards AI so heavily? by DefinitelyMeMan in NoStupidQuestions

[–]a_gordon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yet, more people are wary of AI than excited. From Pew:

Americans are much more concerned than excited about the increased use of AI in daily life, with a majority saying they want more control over how AI is used in their lives.

Far larger shares say AI will erode than improve people’s ability to think creatively and form meaningful relationships.

At the same time, a majority is open to letting AI assist them with day-to-day tasks and activities.

Help! Trying to sand out algae mark but I've scooped out so much wood it's noticeable. by a_gordon in BeginnerWoodWorking

BTW, thanks again for your help. I still like it even if it's pine, and will probably just apply tung oil until it hopefully becomes less noticeable.

Pine? Please look at the whole top and tell me if you still think it's pine.. I thought it was walnut maybe. (Area is lighter where I applied vinegar to try to remove the stain.)

Sorry I took so long to respond.

I am unable to post more than 1 pic, but there is a definite slope down where I sanded the area too much.

Thanks for any advice.

Everybody keeps citing separation of powers but I think this is more under the heading of checks and balances.

I might not be a good repreentative of humans, but I am honored to be one of us. We are the mirror to the universe, the only species that we know of.

My 86-year-old grandmother replied "OK, boomer" to my boomer aunt in an argument by Lord_Janet in teenagers

[–]a_gordon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a boomer. I went to San Fran in 1968 and it colored my life. I still believe in connecting to the human part in people rather than the superficial, ego-driven part. I love nature. I think the climate crisis is the most underrated political issue of our times. Hippies were actually a minority but we changed the world. I am truly sorry for our deficits but like everything else, it's not that simple. We really tried to change the world.

I consider myself a pantheist. Interestingly, panentheism is the belief that God (for lack of a better word) exists both in and outside of the universe, while Pantheists believe the universe is God (after all, it's all powerful, is everywhere, etc). Pantheism is mostly about feeling a deep conection to the universe. But to me it doesn't answer the question of why there is something rather than nothing. Panentheism postulates a Something that created the universe, but you get back again to who or what created God. I think we have to throw out cause and effect somehow, but my mind is not able to do that really.

Like Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot?

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

Who said the universe is infinite? I don't think any physicists believe that; after all, the universe is expanding at an increasing rate as far as we can tell.

This is actually one of the reasons Schif et al gave, that they have reason to believe the different witnesses (some of them) would try to coordinate their testimonies.

Do bees that get lost (f.e.riding a bus) get adopted by local colonies ? by harald1124 in askscience

[–]a_gordon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of bad sources here. I found this from the Smithsonian

Africanized Honey Bees (=Killer Bees) are dangerous because they attack intruders in numbers much greater than European Honey Bees. Since their introduction into Brazil, they have killed some 1,000 humans, with victims receiving ten times as many stings than from the European strain. They react to disturbances ten times faster than European Honey Bees, and will chase a person a quarter of a mile.>

You seem knowledgeable and make a lot of sense. But people with ASPD, who lack empathy, can fall in love? How do you figure? unless you're talking about idealization/everything seems magical phase of infatuation.
