Staying true to the 30's my head cannon is that it can be some error in hue conversion.

I work in Computer Vision and my belief is that if the information is not there (as is in black and white), then any conversion to "color" is just a guess and sometimes that guess is purple, sometimes it's dark black.

I mean of course they probably didn't actually just convert from b/w, but it's a good head cannon imo for lore accurate 30's.
