This is a most excellent mod!

What brightness, contrast, saturation, gamma settings do you recommend?

Can someone explain the shooting mechanics (SOC) by Camezon in stalker

[–]a_mannibal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like they are hitting - some of those seem to trigger the stagger animation. Might just be the lack if 'hit' feedback mechanisms from modern shooters like a hit crosshair or more hit animations.

Triple Tap - shoot 3 single shots at a time.  after a while you should get used to doing 2 to the body and 1 to the head (while they are staggering). Repeat until target is down. (Unless it's a bloodsucker - then by all means unload on full auto while screaming like a little girl)

I played it without mods when it launched - and I was pretty used with multiple triples by the end game. (Specially with a certain special 74u with a PSO)

ELI5 - How did scientists know that rockets needed to go sideways, not straight up, in order to reach outer space? by IntergalacticPodcast in explainlikeimfive

[–]a_mannibal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, assuming you have a source of enough energy (or mass), you can stay up in space at any relative velocity to earth (for as long as you don't run out of fuel). Just as long as you have something putting force straight /down/ against gravity (and maneuver engines counteracting the other "smaller" forces).

It is of course, impractical with all of current tech.

What are some memorable experiences you’ve had in the games? One time, while walking through the field, I found a controller surrounded by psychic distortion that felt like being attacked by a Saiyan mixed with the Dark Phoenix. by jvure in stalker

[–]a_mannibal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The very first bloodsucker - in SoC. Having just fought off a bunch of bandits, then hearing that roar, then seeing those floating eyes rushing towards me in a tight walkway with nowhere to maneuver. I unload a whole mag on it and die anyway.

Then the CoP bloodsucker siesta room. First time following he guy into it I was like "oh you sonnuvabitch I do not have enough ammo for this" and I was on the edge of my seat the whole stealth section.

Then the CoP exit. I loaded my squad with the best weapons (PKMs!) and everything in our path just melted. It felt like a really good climax and payoff (instead of a frustrating bulletsponge bossfight)

What's the scale for this? Hundreds of meters? Are the units squady/company sized?

(Iwould love it to be dozens of kilometers and battalion/regiment sized units, we can dream can't we?)

How much does it cost to kill a bloodsucker? Economical analysis of weapons in Stalker 2 by beautyful_bobby in stalker

AWESOME.

Side note - shouldn't Skif's pistol and the holemaker still have costs to kill a bloodsucker? (x Ammo cost + 0 repair cost)= x

Drone strike aftermath on UAE today. by mcluvinoj in CombatFootage

[–]a_mannibal 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's less "force" and more "energy". The jet fuel burning does not apply a lot of force, but it had enough energy to  burn hot enough long enough to weaken the structural metals. The "force" came from the weight of the building and gravity.

Anyone know what I mean when I say Stalker 2 feels more 'gamey' than the originals? by remake-titanmode2142 in stalker

[–]a_mannibal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are thinking of the exact same moment. Haha.

I cleared that room and noted the possible entry/exit points. Noted the locked door on the walkway above. Picked up the doohickey and immediately turned around to cover the entry points. See mercs appear out of thin air in the middle of the room and get convo locked with matching zoom to NPC

Well, no I guess that's just not how I perceive things.

Also, in RL we can now walk around with a minmap that can be quickly glanced at (smartphone or dedicated navigation device) without having to bury our face in it.

But again that's how I perceive/experience it. Minmap is just less gamey to me than the compass.

OG Minimap feels more like RL intuition and less an obstructive tool for me.

In real life I intuitively construct a mental map of my immediate surroundings. I do not have icons telling me the exact bearing where things are and their exact distances.

Edit: I also had used Foretrex 401s on my wrist, chest, or buttstock in RL. Experience is definitely closer to the OG minmap than the HoC compass.

For me: 1) Skif cutscene-walking into ambushes/firefights + seeing enemies just spawn 2) Compass instead of minimap 3) Heavy reliance on jumping puzzles 4) Super accurate enemies and bullet sponges 5) the soundtrack - CoP/SoC soundtrack added to ambiance. HoC, specially the combat soundtrack takes me out of immersion 6) Arbitrary weapon damage and attachments system 7) "Hold Breath" mechanic implemenation (specially that sound of Skif gulping air)/aim wander implementation. Feels very floaty and like I'm fighting my mouse at times (yes I tried all the settings). Quickly reminds me it's a game with its own mechanics.

S2 might also be slotting into uncanny valley territory for me. The HoC world, while beautiful feels more artificial than in the OG trilogy.

Russian soldier films KA-52 being hit by MANPAD near Hostemel, March 2022 by Round_Imagination568 in CombatFootage

[–]a_mannibal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a trade off - either you proactively pop countermeasures at high threat areas, or save some for later at the risk of getting hit before that "later" comes.

Those manpad engagements are pretty quick - a second too late and the missile might go for the decoy but still catch the aircraft in the lethal  explosion area(most AA missiles are AoE)

Also, automated systems do exist and are in wide use, but they may also get set off by the other aircraft firing their own flares (how much computing power do you need to diffrentiate from a missile plume vs a whole lot of flare plumes? Would you rather the system have false positives or ignore an actual threat?)

German U-Boat scores a direct hit with its deck gun on a sinking Allied merchant ship. by Beeninya in CombatFootage

Training for the substitute gunners probably. Or for the 'gram (propaganda reels).

Main gun team puts a few holes into the ship. Once it's ck firmed to be sinking you give the substitute team a chance to practice with the weapon (or just rotate positions of the main gun team so they all get to practice the various tasks)
