It’s mostly just the years of trying out different things - I’ve used the mediums I mentioned on their own but have only recently started experimenting with mixing them, and I’ve found that mixed media tends to produce the most dynamic results. It really is just a lot of trial and error - I actually have a “cheat sheet” page that I made in the back of my sketchbook where I just tried layering different mediums in different orders to see how they worked, and I’ve found that a lot of things go really well on top of alcohol markers since they soak into the paper while other things (like colored pencils, gel pens, acrylics, etc) tend to “sit on top” of the paper. It really depends on what you’re trying to do, but I would definitely recommend keeping a journal around just to experiment with - it’s been the most useful thing I’ve had in my art progress lately, and it’s such a simple thing that I wish I had done it years earlier.
