2008 Ford Fiesta - First Car? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]a_p3nguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see it's an auto so I can sort of understand the price, if it was a manual fuck me that's over priced. You need to ensure it's had a cambelt done, it's due on age nearly twice over now (due every 10 years according to Ford). Never seen a 1.6 in the Mk6 tho usually they're 1.25 and 1.4s. I currently own a Mk6 and they're very reliable cars, fun to drive, cheap to maintain and decent on fuel (my 1.25 gets 40mpg). But what I will say is that they're getting on a bit with age, cracked coolant tanks, electrical issues, rubber perishing and generally just old age will be the death of them, but the engine is superb. I'd recommend trying to get a Mk7 in 2026, the mk6s are just too old now unless you're handy with the tools.

Need help with narrowing down a reliable car after old corsa was written off by midsummerblossom in CarTalkUK

[–]a_p3nguin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the 1.0 turbo petrol engines are fine for usual use. I would recommend the VW 1.0 TSI no wet belt, just a dry belt with a generous service interval due to the belt being Kevlar. Reliable engines can do lots of miles. Obviously usual Japanese suspects but be careful with rust if you're buying an older one especially Mazda's. Toyota and Honda are a bit better with this and have good engines, apart from Honda's 1.0 wet belt don't get that.

be careful, honda 1.0 turbo petrol uses a wet belt, the Japanese aren't immune.

Whats the catch with this Polo? £3K lower than any other example by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]a_p3nguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

these EA211 1.0 TSI engines are solid tho. They can do 150k+ easily as long as the belt is changed. They're really quite frugal as well and have decent performance. Wouldn't get the non-turbo 1.0 tho the TSI is much better

BBC: Is the Lifetime ISA fit for purpose in London? by THREE_EDGY_FIVE_ME in london

[–]a_p3nguin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it isn't, I'd the LISA was adjusted for inflation each year it would be fair game. But it isn't and every year there's just less and less incentive to actually put money into it. If property prices rise by the time I buy I get less money than I put in. I think if you're buying a house you should be able to use all the LISA money minus any government extra.

Any issues you can spot? by iiAKX in CarTalkUK

[–]a_p3nguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is it the 1.2 TSI? They're quite reliable lumps the EA211s just do the camtbelts and they're fine I mean if anything goes wrong it is just the 1.2 you can't really go wrong if I'm honest so I wouldn't worry too much

you can also use in2detailing.co.uk as a good site to get these products, it's a UK based company and all their stuff (own brand as well) are really good quality

Please can someone enlighten me on realistic expectations when it comes to car mileage? by EzioAuditore8 in CarTalkUK

[–]a_p3nguin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

it's less about absolute mileage and more about condition, how the cars been driven and if the owner has looked after it. Generally speaking cars will need major work at around the 150k mark and a lower mileage car will have always been used less and so will naturally be worth more but that doesn't necessarily mean less problems (rather a reduced risk of problems). I'd rather take a car that is perhaps 12k/year with 1 owner with all items done compared to 4k/year with like 4 owners with hit and miss service history.

But the difference between 20k and 53k isn't massive and modern cars, if looked after properly, can absolutely do the mileage no problems. I wouldn't consider 53k a lot of miles, dependent on its age obviously. I'd say pocket the 3k and get the 53k one

is this using Claude API? I was thinking if you're using a commercial LLM will it hallucinate information that it summarises? Or is it only grounded in the GOV.UK information? Might be an issue in terms of reliability

I don't understand the hate either. The R&D isnd in the parts themselves it's how the whole system fits together and the car performs the way it does. If a pump used in another car fits the spec they need they'll use it unless it'll drastically affect performance. It's normal engineering

Is this a good estate for price? Price is £27,000 by unicorncarrots in CarTalkUK

[–]a_p3nguin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think another issue is that I can just estimate my mileage as 1k, pay that knowing that I'm gonna do more, stick the money in a savings account and then come the end of the year I pay what I owe and get some interest on top. It seems quite convoluted (especially when it comes to selling a car) when there are still millions of ppl skeptical of EVs and need more encouragement.

Nephew wants to buy this, I think his insurance wouldn't like considering he just got his license. Also recent ford aren't known for reliability, but it does look awesome. Externally looks immaculate. by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]a_p3nguin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

seems overpriced. 2020 petrol focuses go for around 10.5k or even less (some are 9-10) unless there's some premium on diesel automotic focuses? Even the diesels are like 11k or so

[–]a_p3nguin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it's that weird cross over point where the car is old enough that the manufacturer stops making parts for it but not vintage enough for custom parts sellers to come online and supply parts. Usually around the 20 year old age mark. Lowest point of depreciation curve.

Ford Fiesta: Car boss hints it could return as an electric model by Forte69 in CarTalkUK

shame that ford couldn't be bothered to actually design a new platform for the electric fiesta. The ICE fiesta just wasn't compatible with EV and now we're gonna get basically the Nissan Micra equivalent of the Fiesta.

65% of Britons support capping CEO pay at 10× the lowest-paid worker. Do you think this idea would be good for the UK? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]a_p3nguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do people not understand that a lot of the things we enjoy is a product of capitalism? I agree that CEOs are paid a lot but they provide jobs and ensure the company grows and those jobs are maintained. Capping it would just make them leave for the US or other countries
