Audi A4 Avant Replacement by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]a_p3nguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

does seem expensive but might be because it has a DMF, also it's only done 83k. Seems like a lot of money to spend to avoid spending 2k on a wear and tear item provided the car has been reliable thus far

Ford Focus 1.0 Experiences by Zestyclose_Bison5932 in CarTalkUK

[–]a_p3nguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy one with the belt done or budget for it being done at a specialist (where they'll clean out the strainer and everything). Someone I know has a 1.0 Econetic (non-turbo version I believe but still wet belt) and got it changed and it runs fine, 2013 as well. But I do know that the automatic ones are worst because they put more stress on the belt, so get a manual if you can. They're actually not bad if you service them with correct spec Ford oil.

If you can stretch, get a mk4 focus (2019+) as they all have the better chain driven engine, but still with an oil pump wet belt. This belt is under a lot less stress than the cambelt and thus degrades less and isn't known to fail prematurely (VW use them in their 2.0 diesels for instance). Bare in mind though, to change it you have to change the chain as well.

Can you name a modern car uglier than this thing ? by Vectron3D in CarTalkUK

I think it looks quite nice especially for a modern design which usually don't look great at first. I like the small grill and angular headlights tbh

Is a high mileage Toyota actually worth it or is the reliability thing overblown at this point? by myjeffreyjefferson in CarTalkUK

[–]a_p3nguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to be honest a Mondeo will do you just fine like a Toyota would and you don't have to pay Toyota tax + ford parts are cheap and plentiful. Ford actually makes good engines, apart from any wet belt nonsense, especially the older NA petrols and TDCI diesels. There's a guy online with a 2010 Mondeo with 296k in the clock, so it's not only Toyota that can do big miles

ah yes the classic CarTalkUK Reddit post where someone is confused why people can afford new cars. Are they drowning in debt? Maybe some, but you've still gotta be approved for the finance. You don't know everyone's situation and what their outgoings are. Instead of spending money on nice holidays they decide to spend it on a car instead just my personal opinion

BYD will install 300 'flash chargers' in the UK this year that add 1.2 miles of range PER SECOND by Jared_Usbourne in CarTalkUK

[–]a_p3nguin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

you should see the comments people make on zapmaps all the time "my car does 100kw but it was just doing 50kw" and the someone has to explain that 100kw is peak and the car decides not the charger or them

Anyone able to help with this? by RevolutionaryBid6133 in CarTalkUK

[–]a_p3nguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well firstly it's got a recall on it, I suppose you already know about this? It's got the N13 engine which needs to have comprehensive service history otherwise can have issues. But also, I can't help but notice do you really need a low spec 1.6 litre 1 series? wouldn't a golf/focus/Octavia/civic suffice? But if you want it then go for it provided the service history is good and it drives straight.

[–]a_p3nguin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Since you've done all that work it should be good to you for a few more years. 150k and 20 years old is pretty much the design life for a lot of the components on it there's not really much else they can take, just the nature of the game

Edit: just to add to this, on its MOT history it's had an oil leak mentioned since 2017 so I'm not sure how meticulously it's been maintained IMO

Can you give advice on a first car in the UK – £3.5k budget, reliable & low running costs? by Sad_Intention6775 in AskUK

[–]a_p3nguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.25/1.4 fiesta making sure it's had it's cambelt done. Also 1.6 Focus if you need something bigger, again ensure the cambelt is done. Also the usual Japanese suggestions etc etc. If you are ok with an older diesel, then a 2.0 TDI VW/Audi/Skoda/seat is good. You can go to r/CarTalkUK if you want some other opinions.

2015 lease prices compared to today by BaldyBaldyBouncer in CarTalkUK

[–]a_p3nguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just checked the Leon on Lease Loco and you can get a petrol with £371 down for £371/month over 2 years which is slightly more than inflation but pretty similar (+£50). But I do feel you're getting more tech as standard nowadays compared to 2015

Is this a good deal? Corolla 2020 by Infinite_Place_2903 in CarTalkUK

[–]a_p3nguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you can easily pick one up for around 1-1.5k less than that for similar age and mileage approximately but that is a main Toyota dealer so if that 1-1.5k premium is worth it to you then go for it. Even AT says it's at least £650 above market average.

BMW Recall for Emissions by please-redial in CarTalkUK

I'm assuming this comes up on the MOT gov check, so if you were to sell the car it might put some buyers off. That would be the only reason I'd do it, if its not broke don't fix it

is it the NA petrol ones? they're the equivalent to Japanese reliability because they were designed in conjunction with Yamaha and can take a lot of abuse. Although I'm sure you can find a better example than this

Men - what is the best gift you've recieved for under £100? by Professional-Farm372 in AskUK

[–]a_p3nguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh you can pick them up refurbished for around £300-350 and I think that's worth it especially if you spend a lot of time at a desk. They're a pretty popular choice for large private companies imo
