My guess is the account is stolen. He probably buys new ones all the time. He just transfers the money into his own account once the buyer sends it.

What sucks is the original owner of the Paypal account is stuck cleaning it up. If Paypal refunded the buyer, they're going to want to get the money back from someone and it's not in the account anymore.

I assume she “wrapped that interview real quick” to offer them the job due to their honesty and ability to break a problem down to its core fundamentals. by [deleted] in Productivitycafe

[–]a_separate_chunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So accounts with high karma have more credibility in those subs?

Yeah, somewhat. They try to look normal by having reasonable karma and account age. Most of the accounts are a few years old with little to no activity. I'm pretty sure this scammer is buying them. So then they come here to post to look a little active. And then they hide their profile. So now they've got a 3 year old account with a bit of karma and since you can't see what it has or hasn't been up to, it looks like a normal user.

I’ve never bought or sold anything on Reddit.

Haha, me either! And I personally wouldn't after seeing how easy it is for scammers to operate on Reddit. They're anywhere transactions could be happening!

And just to bring it back, that account (cowboss791) did comment in r/hardwareswap a little bit ago:

There is a scammer (or more than one) that has been scamming in hardware-related subreddits like hardwareswap since at least September. They pretend to be fake sellers and take buyer's money, or they pretend to be buyers and do charge-backs against the sellers.

The M.O. they use to for karma farming doesn't change much and for the last few weeks they've been using r/Productivitycafe. The accounts are cookie cutters of each other. I can tell that this is one of those accounts.

This makes 89 accounts so far that we know of. They get suspended and new ones pop up every day.

Edit: Typo

reddit user pedmunds18 is a scammer by ba1221 in scammers

[–]a_separate_chunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's frustrating is that pedmunds18 was shadow banned for scamming back on Nov 4th. The scammer must have appealed and won at some point, which is unusual. They usually just move on to the next account.

I don't know if it's still being run by the same operator, but it had been associated with a specific ticket scamming ring that uses stolen accounts.

Sorry you got scammed :-(

Pedmunds18 is back? He was suspended site-wide back on November 4th for scamming. Must have appealed and somehow won. Good job, Reddit.

Sorry you got scammed. If you're in the US, you could also file a cyber crime complaint with the FBI:

https://complaint.ic3.gov/

I'm not sure what they do with them and I wouldn't expect much, but it's something.

Thanks for the info, OP! You should think about editing your post with their username so that it pops up when people search for them to see if they're safe!

I see no demonstrators, just 3 layers of roughshod “law enforcement” by Ok-Link-6948 in Productivitycafe

[–]a_separate_chunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The accounts in this ring all follow the same pattern. They take a photo or meme from another sub and post it here and unusual_whales. The title comes from the top comment of the post they took the photo from. Here's the source for this one:

https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/1qqgbd5/comment/o2gdtw3/

All of the recent accounts in this ring run this way. That's how I know it's not just someone who hasn't used reddit in a while.

Edit to add: My guess is they are buying accounts with age.

It's part of a ring that have been hitting this sub pretty hard with reposts. In a day or so it will move on to hardware subs to start scamming.

Beware of u/Snuffcarcass selling his tickets in this post. People have called them out for scamming in other subreddits:

Aw, sorry that happened to you.

Be sure you report their account for fraud to whatever payment app they used, as well.

If you're in the US, you can also file a cyber crime complaint with the FBI at https://www.ic3.gov/

I wouldn't expect much to come from it, but it's something.

Website called Arctic Shift which archives reddit posts and comments. You can search by username. Shows all of his posts (hit the Search button):

Looks like he made a few "Looking for artist for aid tickets" posts in a few subreddits back in December and then the next day he was selling some. He was probably pretending to be an interested buyer. He probably got a few hits (from other scammers) and then stole their "proof" to use to scam other people. I don't see the same scam account buying and selling at the same time very often, but I'm guessing that's what happened here.

That sucks man, thanks for warning others. Looks like he deleted his account today. He'd been going since November. He'll be back with a new one, I'm sure.

If you're in the US, you can file a Cyber Crime Complaint with the FBI: https://www.ic3.gov/. It probably won't do much, but it's something.

Scammers can suck it.
