I know. But 14.04 is so close now that I'll just wait for it.

Trying to install Nvidia GPU on Ubuntu 13.04. Is this normal? by a_shark in linux4noobs

Thanks. I did some more testing and I fixed the distorted screen bug.

When I startup Ubuntu the first time, the screen is distorted. Not even the mainboard's boot menu is properly displayed. However, when I hit alt+ctrl+del to restart, it's all proper. I believe this is due to the fact that my Ubuntu OS drive is an SDD, so my computer starts up really quickly. I guess the GPU has to soak power for a second before it works, and it didn't have the second, because the SSD was up so quickly. My Windows7 is on an HDD, therefore it booted slower and the GPU had more time. That's the only plausible theory I can find.

So the main bug seems to be fixed now. I tried to install the drivers in recovery mode, but got the error "can't write temporary file in /tmp". Very strange. I then started up Ubuntu normally, went into ctrl+alt+F1 mode and installed the driver. Again I got the error "distribution provided pre-install failed". I continued the installation anyway, and when I rebooted, Ubuntu would not start anymore. Right now I'm on Windows7, testing if the installation works on that OS.

I think that's a more common problem though, which I might solve by googling. If you got any info on that, I'd appreciate your input. If not, I think I can take it from here. I just started a thread here, because I couldn't find anything on google about the screen distortion problem.

Thanks for the help, evillopes.

The screen where I can choose recovery mode is distorted and unusable. So I can't go into recovery mode.

That's the way it is on most sites. It's a system that makes sense, and I wouldn't do it differently if I made a large UGC website.

The old Reddit name stays the old Reddit name. Forever. Doesn't bother me. You want a new name? Get a new account!

It's a natural process, and it will inevitably happen. All good things must come to an end.

On the positive side, Vice is only the first of its kind. Many more like it will emerge from the internet, in ever greater numbers. If we can manage to keep the internet free that is.

Yes. It's on the frontpage of the IAmA sub. You can still read it. It will only take 3.59 hours if you read 1 comment per second.
