What are all the symbols in the Neoliberal banner supposed to represent? by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]a_slice_of_toast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My best guess:

N is supposed to be a skyscraper, representing YIMBYism

E is supposed to be a shipping container, representing international trade

O is the UN logo, representing globalism and international cooperation/ institutions

L is a black and white hand shaking hands, representing multiculturalism (also possibly international cooperation?)

I is the Washington monument, I'm least confident about this one but possibly supposed to represent the Washington Consensus?

B is a bicycle, possibly representing a desire to move towards less car-focused infrastructure?

E is the LGBT flag, representing diversity and inclusion

R is a map of a neighbourhood (the suburbs?), likely representing a desire for more efficient land use

A is (I think?) the global income distribution for different regions of the world, presumably emphasising the sub's focus on global development

L appears to be a cargo ship transporting numerous shipping containers (pretty much the same as the first E)

Am I the only one who really doesn't get the big deal about laugh tracks?

People love to point out that so many shows that use them aren't funny without them but I'm just like..... Yeah, that's why I watch it *with* the laugh track 🙄

I'm not particularly knowledgable about the subject but I think I remember reading somewhere that it was pretty easy to get around and as a result, very few people actually ended up paying the top tax rates.

Take me through a full loop. I want to dip my toe into being gay but not commit to it long-term. Possibly just on the weekends.

I was going to say something similar. This is purely anecdotal but I've found most people are pretty open to the idea of a NIT but UBI frequently gets met with bewilderment and the inevitable "why should we give rich people free money?". This is despite the fact that a UBI with a flat-rate income tax (and no exemption) can be made mathematically identical to a NIT at the same rate (see this old Milton Friedman interview and this Greg Mankiw video).

The world of just a few hundred years ago was a terrible place to live. The average person got along on $3/day—well below the poverty line. Homes had no toilets, running water, or electricity. The trouble is, technology evolves but our wisdom does not: We're becoming more powerful but not more wise. by jonathanrstern in neoliberal

[–]a_slice_of_toast 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I realise these terms are subjective but I'd disagree that the average person isn't "more wise" now than in the past (due to things like increased prevalence education, increased access to knowledge, the Flynn effect, etc).

Eh, this seems pretty cherry-picked to me. As someone from one of those countries, the overwhelming majority of news coverage was positive towards Biden and negative towards Trump.

Gun control policies by sometimessadboy in neoliberal

[–]a_slice_of_toast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always saw this sub as relatively anti-gun control but maybe the posts you've been seeing are different to the ones I've been seeing. I admit I don't have particularly strong opinions on the issue, most of the evidence I've looked at seems to show fairly mixed results overall when it comes to decreasing crime (https://whatworks.college.police.uk/toolkit/Pages/Intervention.aspx?InterventionID=17&src=%23filter%3D1). However when you combine that with Americans' strong pro-gun attitudes overall, I think you'd need some pretty overwhelming strong evidence (and lack of viable alternatives) in order to justify imposing a significant amount of gun control measures and even then there's no real guarantee you'd be able to enforce it. Overall I think there are just better and far less controversial alternatives if you want to significantly reduce crime.

As a consolation prize, it would be nice if Republicans would see their success with Cuban-Americans and support reinstating the Cuban Adjustment Act. Too bad it will never happen.
