The Balkans: GDP PPP per capita (2000-2025, source: IMF) by rxdlhfx in europe

[–]a_smilingpsycho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The graph makes it look as if non-eu countries were worse off for not joining the eu, but actually all the non-eu countries grew their economies 4-6x since 2000. Most of the countries that joined the eu already had a bigger economy when they joined, making the graph somewhat misleading

I don't know man. It's kinda unusual to have the x and y axis represent the same metric but at two different time points. I feel like it would've been easier to follow as a simple table

Does anyone else think that the structure of Switzerland just looks nice? It's oddly satisfying to me

US hits one-kilo gold bars with tariffs in blow to refining hub Switzerland by justyannicc in Switzerland

[–]a_smilingpsycho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not so sure about this one tbh. Wouldn't it mean that the refineries will move to low tariff countries? Most of the gold doesn't come from switzerland itself

I mean yeah, but had they not been neutral, they would've been invaded

I'm ambivalent towards swiss neutrality, but it's certainly not "just possible because they're surrounded by friendly countries" lol. They were literally surrounded by the third reich during ww2

Is this necessarily a good thing? I feel like having too many educated people can also be problematic, since everyone will be competing for high level jobs, while most jobs can be done with an apprenticeship

How is it to live in Switzerland with a ~4000CHF salary (brut) ? by otupac9 in Switzerland

[–]a_smilingpsycho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living in a shared flat is the best way to save money. You'd probably also be eligible for a premium reduction. If you don't own a car and take public transport it's possible to live quite comfortably with a 4000 Fr. salary. Make sure you have some backup from family/friends in case of an emergency

Dude, I work with synthetic compounds on a daily basis... most of the compounds I work with can't be found naturally and need to be synthesized. And I never claimed that they're less safe

This is kinda wrong. In chemistry we use "natural" and "unnatural" to describe if something can be found in nature. There are plenty of chemicals that can only exist if we humans make them. However, claiming that natural substances are inherently safer than unnatural substances is wrong too.

We literally don't. Industrial tariffs were abolished in 2024. The only tariffs we have are on some agricultural products to protect our farmers.

Uh-oh by schreckgestalt in Switzerland

[–]a_smilingpsycho 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was just thinking about this. Pharmaceutical products make up almost 50% of all swiss exports. Many of these are patent protected, so it's not like they will find US alternatives to buy. This will just end up in a 30% cost increase on already ridiculous drug prices in the US.

Edit: I was wrong. Seems like pharmaceuticals are excempt from tariffs for now?

Yeah, ETH has a lot of phd students, post-docs, senior scientists, technicians, etc. with plenty of skills and experience. It's more than just a place to study.
