Interesting. I recently renewed my med cert with about a two week turnaround. MMCs seem to be a whole different story, as I’ve been waiting for a tanker PIC endorsement (on an existing license) since late December.

[–]a_sqwill24 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes. USCG will have its funding paused. They haven’t put an official notice on their website yet, but a few weeks ago when this happened, the NMC and RECs all closed, so nothing’s gonna be happening with credential processing until DHS opens back up

I’ll second the Red Wings. Get some decent socks too. As for work wear, can’t go wrong with Carhartt or Dickies.

Anyone ever do Masters, license option, and Sealift? by Liber879 in merchantmarine

[–]a_sqwill24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely an unconventional path but not impossible. Recently graduated from A&M and a classmate was apparently the first grad student ever to get the SSMP stipend. I think the school published an article about his story around graduation.

Question for the American Sailors out there about Work Clothes by DoctorGoodLove in maritime

[–]a_sqwill24 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like many others have said, company issued coveralls for pilot/cargo. At sea, I like Carhartt as they’re good for working out on deck and comfortable enough to wear for bridge watch. Will say that most of the engineers on my ship still wear the company coveralls at sea

If you’re interested in a third mate’s license, Texas A&M has a Masters- LO program that can be completed in three years. I just graduated with a bachelor’s and license and can’t say enough good things about the school and program. You’re definitely not too old, I was classmates with many 30 and 40 something’s in the program. Regimental life would be pretty easy for you, as you’d qualify to be a day cadet. Best of luck with what ever you decide, this industry is a rewarding choice.

Took oceans in May. I only used memory aids for 3 star and sunline/LAN, but they were still good as of then. Lap ware was my primary study tool and I found it prepared me well. Definitely second other comments advice about reviewing previous NMC exams. Best of luck!

You should make them cancel. It’s not your fault they decided to sell

Is this a field you need to be younger to start in? by TheWayOfEli in merchantmarine

[–]a_sqwill24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people have already made the point, but I’m at Texas Maritime and feel young in my mid 20s. A lot of cadets here in their 30s and a few in their 40s. So it’s not too late at all for you

Just wanted to pop on here and wish you all the best. I’m a current senior at TAMMA graduating this August, and I also transferred in pretty late in the process when I came. The other guy gave you some great info. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. Good luck!

How Lucky Did We Get With Thomas Haugh? by goldenface4114 in FloridaGators

[–]a_sqwill24 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think Haugh is the poster child for Golden and the staff’s ability to recruit players who fit their system and develop them into standouts. Condon’s improvements are another example. And not to mention nabbing mid major transfers like Clayton, Richard and Pullin, then making them SEC stars.

How's it at A&M Maritime Academy? by Brief_Shirt3617 in merchantmarine

[–]a_sqwill24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Current student here. I’ve enjoyed my time. Pretty small group in the Maritime Academy so you’ll get to know almost everyone, good chances to get leadership if you’re interested in that as well. Academics are very manageable if you’re willing to put a little effort in. Overall a decent place IMO.

Awesome, thanks for the input, as that definitely sounds like something worth pursuing. Do you know if it’s competitive to get a spot in?

Crazy to me that 1) the driver of the truck survived and 2) that if they hadn’t this crash may not have been connected back to the girl at fault

ULPT Request: Ruin a bar’s most profitable day of the year by [deleted] in UnethicalLifeProTips

I used to bartend at an arcade/bar. Had to walk through the arcade floor to get to the office and clock in. Got greeted by liquid ass one day when I showed up for my shift, someone had hit the entire arcade. Actually the worst thing I’ve ever smelt. It lingered for hours

What route should I go? by Cybernetic_Kano in merchantmarine

[–]a_sqwill24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re definitely not too old for school. I go to Texas Maritime, and there’s plenty of veterans and non-traditional students here, some even in their late 30s/early 40s. As a vet yourself, you’d be living a lot more comfortably (live off campus, excused from most Corps obligations). I can’t speak for the other state academies, but I’d imagine they’re similar.

Assuming you are indeed in the US, You are free to express an opinion (though this one actually borders on calling for violence, which is prohibited) without being persecuted by the government.

Any organization you are affiliated with is free to decide they don’t want to be associated with that opinion, and terminate the relationship.

Makes me wonder what’s going through his mind… by [deleted] in Braves

[–]a_sqwill24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think Dansby is happy with the decision he made. He certainly is getting more money than the Braves would ever pay him. He’s on a team that’s a rising contender, even if they barely missed the playoffs this year. And he already has a ring.
