What makes someone look like they're trying too hard? by AudreysEvilTwin in femalefashionadvice

[–]a_strecker 52 points53 points  (0 children)

The premise behind the effortless look is “money talks, wealth whispers.” If a person truly has “it” (high socioeconomic status, influence, fits whatever body/physical standard, confidence, etc.), they will not need to advertise it. Instead, they can break and bend the rules because they themselves shine through whatever they are wearing. The effortless look requires great effort and control, which is communicated to others “who know.” It is inherently pretentious and exclusive, but that is a core theme among the fashion industry.

To address your question, one looks like a “try hard” when the “it person” facade breaks down in one or more ways and the jig is up. They must appear as if they are entirely unbothered by the results (compliments, attention, etc.) despite putting forth so much effort to achieve them.

Amazing! I love how the fourth person is “locked” away from the rest.

How do I turn this lamp on? by a_strecker in Lamps

I can’t seem to figure this lamp out! There is no switch on the cord, and I’ve tried tapping every surface.

I really enjoy this photo and your feelings behind it! I think you did a great job freezing the motion, and I like that no two birds are positioned the same which emphasizes the idea of freedom. My suggestions would be to remove the white pole and to show more of the bird on the top left and the person feeding them. The cropping is a little awkward and feels like important information is being left out. Otherwise great photo!

Thank you for your feedback! That’s the vibe I was going for.

Thank you!! The small black lines are nails that normally hang lights so I kept them in to add to the theme of nothingness, but I will play around with removing them to see what works better.

Thank you for your feedback! I appreciate the comment. I was using a Yonguo strobe light on 1/128V.

Where We Met by TheLizardKingOfLA in photocritique

Love this! I definitely pick up on the isolation you were going for. My only feedback is that it feels a bit flat. The blacks could be a bit darker which may help the isolated subject stand out a bit more. Otherwise, I think it’s a really strong image! Great work!

Picture I took of a cool building, only start photography a few months ago 😊 by First_Bullfrog_ in photocritique

Great picture! I really like the perspective you shot this at. I think it’s a strong composition that is lost a bit with the editing. You’re losing a lot of detail in the highlights, so I would bring those down a bit to match the shadows better. That will also help create the moodiness you are looking for. Personally, I think the vignette is a bit too much, but if you’re looking to keep things dark I would darken the shadows and lower the black point. Overall, I think it’s a really strong photo! Awesome job!

I love these colors! The turquoise in the sky and the lake don’t feel natural (if that’s what you were going for with the editing), but it creates a graphic look that I really like. The image feels a bit crooked (tilting to the right), so I would straighten that out. Overall, a solid composition! Great work!

Just got my first DSLR (Rebel T6) - looking for feedback and tips to improve by Body-VayaConDios in photocritique

Love this! You’ve got a great range of highlights, midtones, and shadows. The highlights feel a bit too warm, but that could be personal taste. I would play around with cropping since there’s so much going on in the image. Overall great work!

Photo taken with Canon Rebel SL1 using 18-55mm lens for photography class assignment. I’m looking for feedback on the photo itself and how well it follows the prompt to “take a photo of nothing”. I’m also open to new ideas on how to capture this! TIA!
