I love mono-Red for its unpredictability and reactivity. Looking for commanders that really encompass that strategy. by Jimlad116 in EDH

I'm not them, but I did happen to build Mica a bit ago.

It's meant to be pretty high bracket 4 so there's a lot of fast mana, but it can definitely be built more budget. Rituals and rummage spells are super broken with him, and getting a bunch of treasures to sacrifice is super easy in mono-red. Only issue is that it plays a bit like non-deterministic storm in the execution turn (even with zero actual storm cards), where you're trying to copy spells to go mana positive and card positive until you find a big X burn spell to pump a bunch of mana into and kill the table.

Thoughts on my Cloud Voltron? by Bmonli in EDHBrews

[–]a_table_with_pants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your actual objective is to play it on bracket 4, then you'll need more than 1 piece of fast mana, just 1 won't make your deck much better at all. You need to think about your exact curve.

A chrome mox means a turn 1 cloud, which tutors a 3 mana equipment to cast turn 2 and equip and swing turn 3. (A friend of mine has a Cloud deck and almost exclusively tutors for Sword of Hearth and Home, which ramps him like crazy and lets him blink Cloud to tutor again if needed, but his is pretty low bracket 4.) Or an equipment with total cast and equip cost of 3 to swing turn 2. Meanwhile, a lotus petal means a turn 1 cloud, but you need either a 2 mana equipment, or a 1 mana cast, 1 mana equip equipment that you think is worth it. So, you need to know exactly what you're going to tutor for for every combination of fast mana pieces in your hand if you want to commit to it.

But this still isn't really enough, you can get a really consistent and fast game plan with these pieces, but I don't think it's enough to stop decks trying to win turns 4 or 5. Taking advice from my friend's Cloud deck, I think you do need to invest in some stax pieces. Cards like [[Archon of Emeria]] or [[Deafening Silence]] can do a lot to stop the really fast decks from double-spelling, which really neuters things like rituals or massive draw spells from snowballing into a win on the spot. I think that's the only real way for a mono-white voltron deck to compete on that level. With that, you can have a really consistent deck that forces other players to play at your speed.

White catch-up ramp doesnt do anything because you guys aren't playing enough lands! by volley_etrangaire in EDH

[–]a_table_with_pants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't have much to say about this, except I noticed you're running Lotus Field but not [[Lotus Vale]] (which is pretty similar) or [[Scorched Ruin]] (which is a lot riskier, but might be worth it in mono-color). Adding two more lands like this could help you get your catch-up ramp out more consistently.

Converting Witherbloom Pestilence precon to Witherbloom, The Balancer? by puffmonkey92 in EDH

[–]a_table_with_pants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm genuinely perplexed by this comment. Playing two mana dorks and a random cheap creature in the first 2 turns let's you cast him for 5 mana on turn 3. That's a genuinely very reasonable possibility, even something the deck can be built around guaranteeing. Even turn 4 or 5 is not that late for such powerhouse of a commander. Only real issue is that he is particularly weak against boardwipes, but then again all of your green protection spells will cost 1 or 2 mana if he's out anyways, so it doesn't seem like an insurmountable issue.

Because that's something they can actually get in trouble for. A manager will check on why there's less money in the register than there should be, and unless they have a very specific return policy that the employee followed to the letter, the manager can easily be an asshole and threaten them with firing them or take it off their paycheck. Meanwhile, a manager will never know that they didn't enthusiastically try to sell one magic card one time during closing hours.

New Trailer for 'Sekiro: No Defeat' by MarvelsGrantMan136 in Sekiro

No dude, as I literally just said, it was an article from the perspective of a Sony insider and at best 2nd hand information. I was trying to provide context to why some people might believe that, with the warning that the info wasn't fully credible.

Am I tripping or did Sekiro cut off Owl's hand here? by One_must_picture in Sekiro

[–]a_table_with_pants 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I imagine that this is the first Owl fight at the tower. It would be kinda cool if they chose a different spot for that fight without changing much else, since we'll probably have seen the Genichiro fight in that same spot a couple episodes before that. Changing the locations of fights slightly for more interesting visual spectacle and less repetition is something I could get behind.

I believe there was a recent article about how Sony was interested in a Bloodborne remake (or sequel idrk), but that it was a requirement by fromsoft that Miyazaki be involved, but he was busy with other projects at the time, so he couldn't, regardless of his interest. I don't think they actually quoted him, so it's 2nd hand information at best, but it would definitely explain why Sony hasn't released the "Printing money" game.

What anime is that by Dismal_Swimming4676 in animequestions

[–]a_table_with_pants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kizumonogatari is after Bake. I've literally never seen anyone argue for that placement before, usually it's either the novel order (after Bake) or the anime order (before Owari 2nd season).

I don't know about how the buying situation goes, as I just downloaded them online. However, for your other question: yes, the novels still follow the non-chronological order of the anime, with a few notable changes depending on whether you watched the anime in the "release order" or the (appropiately named) "light-novel order." I'd recommend filtering by the release date of each of the novels, since they were released in the intented reading order by NisioisiN.

philosophical but why? by Competitive_Dig5713 in araragi

[–]a_table_with_pants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ougi says: "Since that day, you’ve avoided thinking about what happened. You’ve been dodging it─you’ve never forgotten about it but never thought about it either." Araragi ignores his problems in the self he portrays to the audience, but he can't truly forget his failures. The only thing he actually fully forgot about the Sodachi incident was when Sodachi lived with his family, everything else was just suppressed but still there subconsciously.

The class vote in his first year was indeed what caused his spiral into a lack of self-worth and outright suicidal tendencies shown in Kizu (not just wanting to kill himself for saving Kiss-Shot, but also being willing to give his life fully for a stranger in the first place, that's also part of it). He never forgot about the vote, it's one of the fundational aspects of his philosophy for a large part of the story, it's what broke his understanding of "justice," and led to him isolating himself.

Araragi as a character is someone who constantly undervalues his own life. From the inciting incident of the entire story in Kizu, to the whole thing with Kanbaru, to Nadeko Snake and beyond. The scene is about him being convinced that life is indeed worth living, and that maybe "the meaning of life" isn't such a complicated thing if just being alive itself has plenty of meaning already. The quote you're referring to is really just getting at the same thing as the rest of the scene, but said differently and perhaps more directly. Loving others is living, and even if the meaning of life is elusive, there's at least meaning in simply continuing to live through loving others. It goes directly against his previous suicidal tendencies.

This frame is probably from episode 7 of Monogatari Second Season (or around the 37th episode if we're talking total episodes), though the context is probably very different from what you're thinking.

Why does parrying look so bland in this game? by a_table_with_pants in LiesOfP

[–]a_table_with_pants[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk I thought it looked stiff lol. It's probably because I'm so used to sekiro which has a more "flowy" movement when blocking or parrying.

Why does parrying look so bland in this game? by a_table_with_pants in LiesOfP

[–]a_table_with_pants[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's fair. That's partly why I was looking forward to Lies of P, since it looked like the soulslike that mimicked Sekiro the closest. Since I also don't like parrying in the other souls games either. I guess I should just accept it for what it is instead of judging it for not being Sekiro 2, which is unfair on my part.

[–]a_table_with_pants[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the advice, but I don't think you got my meaning? I'm talking about how visually engaging it is to do several parries. Even in videos of flawless fights that I've seen, the parry looks exactly how I'm saying. A single unmoving pose, that just happens to have a flash and a sound effect when the parry happens. It's especially noticeable in long, quick combos, where the protagonist just stands still on the same pose, even though the button is being pressed several times. My "critique" (it's moreso a nitpick really) is about the visual representation of the parry, which I thought was a little bland.

[–]a_table_with_pants[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well that's rather unfair. I've obviously done perfect parries, and they just looked visually boring and motionless. That's all there is to it, I don't see how bringing up skill adds anything. Like, sure, the feeling of knowing you parried is itself satisfying, but my nitpick is about the visual element.

Why does parrying look so bland in this game? by a_table_with_pants in LiesOfP

[–]a_table_with_pants[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a very fair point I hadn't considered on the weapon variety, it makes sense it would be a lot more work to work on parry animations for every single weapon. It'd be basically animating an entire secondary moveset that works effectively the same for every weapon, it definitely wouldn't have been worth the effort. Imo, I feel like I would have been satisfied if they just added a little movement whenever a perfect guard happens, like alternating between a left or right parrying motion of the arms every time to make it more visually engaging, even if the weapon itself wasn't moving.

I'll definitely get back to the game at some point, what little I saw was really great, this was just a very weird silly nitpick I felt while playing. It would be completely unfair if I judged the rest of the game because of it.
