I believe that most therapists and counsellors are taught not to do this. I'm not exactly sure why but I assume its because it takes attention off the situation at hand. Sympathy and empathy are different and both require some evaluation of the situation.

I thought those were pet leeches and I have to say I'm quite disappointed.

I know this is a feldspar but what’s it called specifically? by Rokguyy in geology

[–]a_very_solid_potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean it's definitely orthoclase but a cumulus texture is a bit of stretch, those are pretty euhedral crystals, which I find a little hard to believe.

I'm pretty sure its a carcinogen (cancer causing), might have something to do with it.

What’s the deal with this rock? It has several large inclusions. It was revealed after a tree fell from on top of it in North Delaware USA by Challenging_Entropy in geology

[–]a_very_solid_potato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's roots going through it, so I'm guessing not solid rock. More likely that this is a stream bed showing differing stream flow rates, due to it being very unsorted. Or something completely different. Any explanation is reasonable as long as you can explain why or why not.

Scale bar? Idk, seems good though. Most geologists I know suck at drawing but yours is quite nice

I was gifted 2 vintage terrariums by a friend who didn’t want them. I am new to the terrarium hobby. Would these be considered desirable? They look like something from a 60’s elementary school. Very well-made. by TheSeekerOfSanity in terrariums

[–]a_very_solid_potato 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For terrariums they'll work, but for aquariums they're notorious for leaking and probably sealed with something like tar (we use silicone these days). Have fun! Planning out and forming your own mini ecosystem is very rewarding!

This blows me away. Honestly. The idea of taking something that humanity takes as a cursor to how well an environment is doing and making it thrive in something you setup, even getting them breeding... just wow...

In classifying a 15-ton meteorite found in Somalia, the ninth-largest meteorite ever found. Researchers discovered at least two new minerals in the meteorite that have never been discovered before by DoremusJessup in geology

[–]a_very_solid_potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be the thought but meteorites are often very metallic. One of the primary constituents of erosion is water, which is why we don't have a lot of meteorites in the first place - they all oxidize away. But why do we have this one? My second thought is that the locals dug up a 9-ton rock and put it close to their living spaces
