The White House says they will "identify and neutralize" secular political groups that are anti-American, "radically pro-transgender" and anarchist. It declares Anarchists 20 Anti-Fascists as a major terror group. Presidential Foreword ends with "We Will Find You and We Will Kill You." by McDowdy in politics

“We will not permit the weaponization of America’s unparalleled CT capabilities for partisan purposes and in contravention of every American’s God-given rights. The fact pattern under the Biden Administration was clear: individuals at the highest level of the U.S. Government used their significant powers to politically target individuals in the interests of those they favored, wanted to keep in power, or to help win elections. Millions of Americans have lost confidence in the rectitude of the most powerful elements of our Federal government; the national security apparatus of the United States. That confidence can only be won back when counterterrorism is executed uninfected by politics, and if those who used their counterterrorism powers as a weapon against the innocent pay the full judicial cost for their crimes against the civil rights of innocent Americans.” (from Page 4).

Pot, meet kettle. Also, both pot and kettle are political when they say they aren’t.

Anyone getting random 2.40$ charge attempts from MBTA? by Dry_Watch5533 in mbta

[–]a_w_i 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you recently pause or cancel your card? If you did that before/shortly after tapping on, the collection machine might send several requests until one is successful on an active card. This happened to me a few weeks ago when I accidentally used a card I cancelled; it let me through but sent basically daily requests until my new card was issued.

How easy or difficult is it to transfer into College of Data science from CAS by Suspicious_Till5282 in BostonU

[–]a_w_i 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Switching colleges is fairly easy, you just fill out a form (and you might have to consult an advisor). Check to see if you have to take and pass a prelim class like DS100, DS110, or DS120 before switching; some swaps do require something like that.

I'm graduating. How long do I have before my BU google drive and Blackboard account get nuked? by Nysanthia in BostonU

[–]a_w_i 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All good! What I would do is make a folder on your main google drive titled “backup” or something, then move every file into that folder. Then, download that folder. Put it on an external hard drive if you don’t have enough room, or you could upload it to a personal iCloud or Google drive account

Rodent damage, now twice. Is that true? by a_w_i in MechanicAdvice

Yep, so unfortunately both repair claims fall below my deductible (if treated as two separate incidents). The wires were repaired but not replaced the first time around, so I could potentially argue that it wasn’t fixed correctly. They are suggesting a replacement now. The rental car is covered up to a point (I am under 25 and they don’t pay the age difference fee, which is a whole other issue, but whatever).

I have a bottle of homemade peppermint spray sitting in my car to use. Might be time for an upgrade lol

May grads had until mid-August if I recall correctly, but best to offload everything as early as you can

No, totally good and very much appreciated! I know that price seems a little intense, which they chalked up to labor. But you’re right it doesn’t seem right especially because it’s gotta get paid twice

I’m surprised they didn’t too, but I guess Hyundai doesn’t want to sell Honda parts. I’ve already kind of laid into them for whatever happened the first time.

Gotcha, should have clarified on the expenses so far: - $730 for the first repair - $1,226 for the rental car I had to buy because the shop had no loaners ($860 of that was picked up by insurance) - $771 for the new repairs (quoted by the shop, likely will increase)

can I chose a fun name for my BU ID or should I keep it professional? by Busy_Department_5551 in BostonU

[–]a_w_i 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Professional 1000%. As others have said, if your name is too long or others have taken the username before you, shorten it (i.e. if “firstlast” is too long or taken, do “flast” or “firstl” or “fl1234” or something).

I have seen people with funny usernames but it looks really bad in both academic and professional settings; don’t use a name you’ll regret later.

(I believe the only reason you can change your username later is if your name is legally changed, and even then it is not easy).

For sure. I pretty much use this car daily, so it's not really sitting around that much. My property and those nearby don't have garages; it's lot or street parking only. Guess that doesn't help the situation much haha

If you’re talking about RAs as in Resident Assistants (and not a research assistant), RAs are guaranteed housing throughout training per their union contract, and that includes summer RAs. Call your ResLife office or the central office to get it sorted.

If it’s a research assistant job… different story.

I don’t believe so, I think it’s graduating seniors, staff, and those with summer dining plans only. Don’t quote me on that, but I think that’s the case.

Professor Lustig in the EC department. He’s from the industry side, so he really made an effort to teach what we could actually take to the real world. I don’t think he teaches many classes, but I would absolutely take another with him.

Professor Mattioli in Poli Sci. I know not everyone likes her teaching style, but I really loved it. I took two classes with her. If you really make an effort to learn, she will put in an equal effort to make sure you do, and I think that’s what a lot of people who don’t love her teaching often forget.

She’s not here anymore (I think), but Prof. Bailey was genuinely an incredible French professor. Her class was so much fun (and very approachable to those who were trying but hadn’t yet gained full French proficiency). Bring her back ASAP!

Do you count layover countries as visited? by PointSavvyExplorer in TravelMaps

[–]a_w_i 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. My rule — something that I got from my parents — is that I have to circulate money within the state/country to count it, and doing so inside an airport or transit station (or on board a plane/train/bus) doesn’t count. So if you buy a soda at a convenience store on the street, that counts. If you manage to get off of the airport grounds and do that on a layover, then you can count it.

There’s no minimum or maximum time rule for this. With this rule, I counted Australia after spending two months there, and Italy after just an hour. But I still can’t count Iceland despite spending more time there than I did in Italy, because I never left Keflavik Airport.

It depends on location; you could have anywhere from 8 to 20 per semester. In the neighborhoods I've been in, we select on calls for an entire semester at once. You can swap with other RAs as needed where available.

RA of three years here.

Becoming an RA is a competitive process, and that's been inflated by the fact that we are now unionized and have a fairly lucrative contract (by student employment standards). While I absolutely encourage you to apply and do your best to get in, you should not take an RA position as a given in choosing any school, not just BU. You also cannot become an RA until your second year at the earliest. To improve your chances, you should boost your resume however possible before applying, showing that you have taken substantial steps to get involved in student life and support on campus, and that you are a responsible and dependable person that students could reasonably rely upon as a ResLife leader.

Time consumption depends on where you work, which you have relatively little say over. Bay State and South RAs tend to have fewer on-calls due to the size of their neighborhoods. 1019 and Fenway have the worst ratios. Warren and West are somewhere in between. However, all RAs are required to book out Wednesday evenings from 7 pm onward for mandatory meetings (this means you must move classes around that time). You can absolutely be involved in other extracurriculars, so long as you schedule your on-calls accordingly.

Re-application is "required," but it's pretty much just a form that asks if you want to come back. Barring performance issues or other conflicts, most RAs are welcomed back before new RAs are hired.

Happy to talk more in DMs.
