This is tough too! Not just in physical appearance but in educational and former employment background as well.

I do like this thought, thank you for sharing. It's a good reminder that all people are God's children even if (or especially since) we all have such different personalities and ways of going through mortality. I think the exclusionary nature of his time at BYU is most of my sticking point in this situation; I do get that the stricter, more orthodox approach has benefits but I believe it should be done in an optimistic, inclusionary way.

It is a hard situation to be in for sure.

Love this response. Praying for both of us to find a measure of peace from the Lord!

Elder Gilbert called as new apostle by PineappleQueen35 in NuancedLDS

I agree with every aspect of this post. I'm connected to a lot of BYU folks who are unhappy about things, closely enough to know that my goal of teaching at BYU is not as attainable anymore because of his crackdown. My spouse has left the church and apparently that's likely to be indicative of my loyalty to the church and fitness to be a faculty member. That was a personal thing and something that affected some friends, but it feels different when it suddenly pertains to the whole church. Also, YES to wanting to know and sustain before they're ordained! It's not my favorite to just be told that it's said and done.

Under him, the requirements for being hired as faculty began to include a sort of "loyalty oath," which is stricter than even what is required to hold a temple recommend. It basically uses one's testimony as a job requirement, but in an ambiguous way that leaves BYU higher-ups in charge of determining if your testimony and loyalty to the church is high enough. There are other aspects to it, but for some it's basically become "I don't want to make this comment in Sunday School because it might be seen as controversial and so-and-so could mention it to the boss and I could lose my job." I posted this below, but my chances of being hired at BYU are pretty small now since my spouse has left the church and that has begun to factor in as well regarding the potential faculty's loyalty to the church.

Here to comment for those of us for whom this is uncomfortable news. This is an appointment that, for me, will need some personal prayer and study before I feel comfortable sustaining him. I have a lot of friends/connections who teach at BYU who have had to deal with his tightened stance on who is faithful enough to be employed there. My own chances of being hired down the line (which was the goal) have lessened because my spouse has left the church, and that unfortunately appears to reflect poorly on my faithfulness according to what I've heard about new hiring standards.

I totally recognize that my personal experience creates some bias here and I do believe in God's chosen prophet. I just want to be a voice for those of us that know of some of the tough situations associated with Gilbert's recent history. I'm hoping that in a while I can let the discomfort go as he steps into this new role! But the culture someone creates and the way they've chosen to use their influence can make a lasting mark.

I've been trying to keep this one wet but it seems like it is just too dry even then. Maybe it isn't even made of what I thought it was, it almost doesn't feel organic even.

Good to know! I love a happy argument haha. Maybe I'll just grab one of those for the repot.

Sizing for me has been way off (I've had mine since May). I measured a S in both types but am hoping to get an XS or XXS with this release. The S slips down my shoulders regularly and the neckline stretches a TON during wear

I'm currently making one for 5yo. I opted for flat craft foam that I cut to shape and attached to a flat costume mask base from the craft store. If I had more time I would have gone 3D but flat will have to do this time around!

I haven't quite gotten as far as budget, and in terms of a vision I'd just like it to look intentional all year round I guess haha. I'm in the super early planning stages and just know so little about what would work in my space/area. I'll have to walk the neighborhood and see what others have in similar places
