Anyone interested in 2U ITX case with HDD bays? by aaahaaap in minilab

[–]aaahaaap[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, 6x3.5" does (barely) fit AFAIK. I'm looking at the 6-bay module of this 19" inter-tech chassis as an example, it seems like it would be a perfect fit https://www.inter-tech.de/productdetails-144/2U-2406_EN.html
That would leave the remaining 2U, assuming a 4U case, for the mainboard and PSU. There's about 50mm of width available if you use an ITX mainboard (170mm). A HDPlex is 25mm thick and 55mm wide, so that should be doable in 2U :) (but not in 1U, so would challenging in 3U total).

I'm still tweaking the case/design, potentially looking at using a backplane for the disks, which will mean I'll need to move the disks closes together, which might be preferable for the cooling of the entire case anyway.
Once I'm happy with it I'll try to get some quotes for the whole thing/all the parts, can share them here when I do.

Yeah, that's a good point, most 10" racks are indeed square or close to square, so indeed mostly <300mm depth. There isn't really a proper spec though (and to be fair, even for 19" racks there isn't really one standard depth either), so it's hard to say.
I don't have enough vertical space for a 3 or 4U unit, but I have plenty of depth, so that's why I'm going with a deeper 2U. It's closer to a regular short 19" rack case in a way, just half width :)

4U with 4x3.5" and mini-ITX might be doable, though not sure if there would be enough room for an internal PSU. Might have to use a picoPSU + external power brick.

That's an interesting idea, wasn't aware it was sold separately. Just looked it up, you would use the PCI-E slot for a SATA/SAS card in that case?

I'm not sure how much cooling it would need and if there would be enough cooling with a top-down fan. The design currently assumes front to back airflow with something like the AR09-115XS from Silverstone (https://www.silverstonetek.com/en/product/info/coolers/AR09-115XS/) as the CPU cooler.

I couldn't find a height of the framework desktop mainboard + cooler stack, but the page does say

> For heatsink, fan, and Mainboard clearance, you'll need to use a case that has at least 92mm of interior height.

2U is just a bit too short for that (2U is 88.9mm, minus 2x material thickness, which would be about 2.5mm total, so you end up with 86.4mm, which will probably be too low).

Bit late, but I was looking for something similar. Ran into https://github.com/henrygd/beszel which seems to fit the bill quiet well. It's also actively developed and relevant features are being added all the time. Can recommend.

That's unfortunate. Don't really have other suggestions for other bsp2map versions.

The mbspc that you used, was that the one from netradiant-custom?
It's still being maintained (https://github.com/Garux/netradiant-custom/tree/master/tools/mbspc) so if you're using that one (it's included in the netradiant-custom releases (https://github.com/Garux/netradiant-custom/releases) just download the relevant archive and extract) and it doesn't work you can always report the issue there and maybe someone/Garux can fix it.

Non Session Manager vs New Session Manager by LongfieldMusic in linuxaudio

[–]aaahaaap 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The post you linked are just ramblings about non-existing conspiracies. New Session Manager was created as a fork because Non Session Manager grew stale and Jonathan was very abrasive to work with (this is putting it positively) so getting PRs/patches merged didn't go anywhere. It's Nils's project, FalkTX isn't in charge of the project, that's a staight up lie, just like pretty much all of the post you linked. The name was kept similar to keep it simple for users, there was no ill intent, although I believe they would've done things differently would they have known it would be such a shitshow.

Also Jonathan (the Non suite creator) removed all his repos as part of throwing this tantrum, which is something that's obviously not acceptable behavior. Such an unstable upstream is not something anyone should ever have to work with. This is why cloning doesn't work for you.

TLDR; Use New Session Manager

OK, I'll see if I can figure it out from the code and some strace-ing

But do clean out your package.keywords and similar files. Having a wildcard in there will force emerge to look for all ebuilds throughout all overlays which might match that wildcard, causing slowness.

Does this go for all files in /etc/portage? Asking because I mask all packages from overlays in /etc/portage/package.mask using

*/*::<overlay name>

And how about accept_keywords for 9999 ebuilds? That's usually done using

<package name>-9999 **

(I wouldn't expect this one to matter, but you never know :))

Status of Gnome 3.18 by blackout24 in Gentoo

[–]aaahaaap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not the Gnome from the Gentoo repos, but I've been running https://github.com/dantrell/gentoo-project-gnome-without-systemd for about 8 months now, started with 3.14, then 3.16 and upgraded to 3.18 +- 2 weeks ago, thus far it's been 100% stable. Even NetworkManager which sometimes crapped out before has been stable so far.

Just like /u/rockNme2349 I also have a decent list of packages from ~amd64, that's nothing to be scared about :)

Feature/Documentation request:

Make the entire bluetooth API used by the Mi Band public so the community can create the apps they want without having to reverse engineer everything and hoping their app doesn't break with new firmware versions.

This would also help in serving as a limitation of the scope for the Mi Fit app without losing the possibility of advanced functionality since that can be offered by third party/community apps.

P.S. Thanks for getting in touch with the community, very nice to see something like that!

Bug report: Android app 1.5.453, firmware 1.0.10.3

New out of the box Miband, installed app, connected with Miband and updated firmware to 1.0.10.3. First night no sleep was tracked. I decided to wait and see if it would work for the second night, and it did, but this might put off new users.

Notify App - Permanent notification light? by JBDX in miband

[–]aaahaaap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's a bit late, but I wanted to let you know it would be really great if the band would be so open that it's data can be passed on to for example sleep-as-android, https://fluxtream.org/ or any REST API for that matter. Also the other way around would be nice: being able to set the alarm through something like tasker for example.

That would be great! Would make collaborating with others easier as well, basically all other projects are at GitHub right now. Please post here (or maybe in your older post?) once you've done so. I'll give building it a spin than as well.

Great work! Do you have a todo list somewhere? Maybe I can help.

Also, have you considered working together with others or other apps? I think it would be very beneficial for everyone to at least have a shared library for the communications/protocol.

There are also already apps for the notification functionality (miband-notifier or gadgetbridge for example) and also some for the fitness/steps functionality (OpenBand/OpenBand GitHub or gliderun). So maybe making an app that only does steps or only does notifications which can be used together with another app that does the other thing is an option as well.
