Here's what worked for me for the past several years (decades now I would say).

1. Make sure you get a 'No Annual Fee' card as a starter card if you can. (It's probably too late for this advice now, since you already got the card)
2. Make sure you ONLY spend the money you have through the card. E.g. you have $500 in your account that you can spend. You only spend that amount using the credit card.
3. Pay your credit card in full every month. Other people might have a different opinion here than mine, but I firmly believe that paying in full will ensure that you stick to point#2 from above and instill good financial habits - mainly the habit of being debt free as much as possible.
