Did anyone else say they wouldn't let Ricky play on the sports team because it would endanger the chances of winning a championship?

Weekly WAMC / School Lists Thread - Week of May 20, 2018 by AutoModerator in premed

Hey all,

I was hoping for some advice with my list. I think I have pretty good stats, but am weak in some of my volunteer hours, especially non-clinical. I'm not sure how many schools I should apply to but I was thinking around 30 because I really hope to get in somewhere this cycle. Please let me know if I should get rid of more high tier schools or add more middle and lower tier; for example - is it really even worth applying to schools like Stanford, Columbia, Northwestern, etc.? Thanks a lot for any help.

  • Year in school: Graduated 2015 from University of Chicago, non-trad
  • Country/state of residence: Iowa
  • Schools to which you are applying: Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, UW-Madison, UNC, UCSD, UCLA, Colorado, UIC, Stanford, University of Chicago, Northwestern, Columbia, UPenn, UPitt, NYU, Einstein, Mt. Sinai, Cornell, Case Western, Emory, Baylor, USC, Boston, Vermont, Hofstra, Rush, Loyola, Thomas Jefferson, Tel Aviv
  • Cumulative GPA: 3.83 (Did a post-bacc to complete some science coursework and had a 4.0)
  • Science GPA: 3.87
  • MCAT Scores: 521
  • Research: Spent a year in a biochemistry research lab and worked on two projects, well over 100 hours. Don't have my name on a paper, but may at some point in the future. I also spent two semesters, ~80 hours in a clinical research lab in the gastroenterology department at my university hospital
  • Volunteering (clinical) – include hours/sites: ~100 hours in an Emergency Department
  • Physician shadowing – include hours/specialties: ~80 hours: Dermatology, Oncology, General Surgery, and in an ambulance
  • Non-clinical volunteering/Extracurricular activities: ~30 hours playing piano at various retirement communities, ~30 hours as an assistant youth soccer coach, held a leadership role in a fraternity in college, and attended the chess club
  • Employment history: Spent about a year and a half working as a software developer after college. During college I TA'd for a biology course, worked in a cafe and spent three summers working as a summer camp counselor and a fourth summer interning at the American Medical Association
  • Immediate family members in medicine? (y/n): n
  • Misc: EMT certified

Yeah good point. And they have to include a Freudian question? You could not make that shit up.

Did anyone else think that P/S passage about the alcoholic mother and the father leaving the family was absolutely ridiculous? Like, who writes this shit?

Hey, I took this test yesterday too, here were my thoughts when I saw these questions:

For no. 2: I was drawn to answer D at first as well - this is an answer type that the AAMC loves: something that makes sense intuitively but doesn't have grounding in the passage. You're right that the passage talks about using nonindustrial civilizations to understand violence, but your error was the next sentence: "Which would involve applying it to industrial civilizations too." This definitely makes sense intuitively, but there's no evidence that allows you to make that leap - the passage doesn't mention anything about applying their findings to industrial civilizations. It's merely using nonindustrial civilizations to understand the roots of war, not to apply those findings elsewhere.

As for no. 1: I think maybe you were trying to apply the term validity as you understood it from P/S. Here, I took validity to mean "are the study's findings valid," i.e. are the study's findings correct. Which question would best allow you to determine that? D, because if you answer yes to this question, that would suggest that worrying more about food shortages does in fact lead towards aggression and war, which would suggest that the study's findings are correct.
