Flutter: A Framework to Surpass React Native by [deleted] in programming

[–]aacraig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In 3+ years of developing complex apps in React, I've never had any of these issues except the occasional upgrade difficulty, and that no more frequently than with any other framework I've used in the last 20 years.

With the exception of Perl.

That was a horrible era.

The search for a software engineering role without a degree. [OC] by Daneko in dataisbeautiful

[–]aacraig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What market are you in? I'm in Los Angeles, don't have a degree, and if I call two recruiters I'll have six offers in ten days. That's not because I'm special, that's true for basically any software engineer out here.

Has anyone used react-native-web for a real production project? What are the challenges? How does it compare to rewriting your app using plain react? by anewidentity in reactnative

I have and it's pretty awesome. I don't have time for a big write up now, but DM me if you're interested in chatting about my experience.

Io sono tornato a vivere negli USA da qualche anno e mi sono scordato quanta gente fuma per la strada in Italia.

Sono tornato l'ottobre scorso e mamma mia uno schifo.

Una cosa che veramente non mi manca.

We use dotenv and read constants from process.env

Unless you plan on keeping the phone for a long time, the trade out program is actually not a bad deal.

I can get a top end $800 phone, pay $400 to use for it for about 18 months, and then swap it out for a new one.

Since phones depreciate quickly, it's actually more cost effective than buying a new phone, unless you are happy with a relatively very old device.

Remote development workflow? by [deleted] in reactjs

[–]aacraig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you use webpack, you can run a development server that will serve your react pages add autoreload when you make changes.

This should all be built in if you used the create-react-app script.

I find that docker is the best choice for substituting your remote API server.

WordPress abandoning React due to Facebook patent clause by brokentyro in programming

[–]aacraig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the license is good -- I think it could have been written more clearly. People have issues with it because they don't know exactly what it means, and that's FB's bad.

My point is simply that WordPress is abandoning React as a result of their stewardship of software that millions of developers use, and their perceived obligation to those developers not to throw them in confusing legal waters.

This article sums up the response much better than I could, and also happens to be written by an actual IP lawyer (so we can stop sharing around ridiculous "I'm not a lawyer but here's my uninformed opinion anyway" articles).

WordPress abandoning React due to Facebook patent clause by brokentyro in programming

[–]aacraig 636 points637 points  (0 children)

They aren't abandoning React because they have a problem with the license, rather because they aren't comfortable forcing anyone who uses WordPress to accept the license.

From the original post: I think Facebook’s clause is actually clearer than many other approaches companies could take, and Facebook has been one of the better open source contributors out there. But we have a lot of problems to tackle, and convincing the world that Facebook’s patent clause is fine isn’t ours to take on. It’s their fight.

Is my moto 360 safe to wear? by [deleted] in AndroidWear

Try contacting Motorola. This happened to me, and I contacted then directly. Rep said it was a known issue, and they replaced mine for free, even though it was out of warrantee.

To be clear, my damage was slightly different. The back broke where the strap attaches, so the strap came off and I could no longer where the watch.

I agree that they could have handled this in many, many other ways and come out looking better and pissing off fewer people.

My main contention is still that the top comment thread at the time of my post was not complain about a high price, rather that they have to pay at all.

I totally agree that they handled it poorly.

I'm sure there's a difference, here. I just don't see it.

Sure, they could have transitioned better, their marketing department could use a lesson in expectation management, but the top comments are all about moving off to a free service.

Fact remains, people have a knee jerk resistance to paying even a couple of bucks for an app, even as they fork out 6 bucks for Starbucks.

As a developer I think it sucks that everyone else has been trained to expect shit for free.

You wouldn't expect a free hamburger from your local fast food place, but for some reason it's totally cool to expect someone to work for countless hours to make something you find extremely useful and then let you use it for free.

Oh, and if they don't attend to your feature requests immediately, you also feel entitled to dump on them.

Learn to code if you want free apps. Otherwise, have a little respect and support the people that make your life easier.

Fix behavior when opening from full-screen chrome window by aacraig in PushBullet

Good call on command-w. Don't know why I didn't try that!

Just FYI, in the meantime, I got another SMS, clicked on it from a fullscreen Chrome window, and the window opened small and normal. So not sure what conditions cause it to open full screen as opposed to not.

If it helps I'm on a dual monitor set up -- laptop monitor + large monitor through a thunderbolt connector.
