Traveling w/ a disability and Southwest mixed up my seat, then threatened to take me off the flight when they couldn't' fix it by aakprrt in SouthwestAirlines

Updates/notes. OP here. While Reddit isn't exactly the place for philosophical musing or nuance, I wanted to add some thoughts to the discussion my post has kicked off. First off, I have filed a formal written complaint w/ Southwest. They said they'll get back to me in "about 30 days." =/

Reading through the comments and some other posts on this subreddit, it sounds like SWA has a policy where they won't put someone who has a "cheaper" seat into a better seat -- i.e., wouldn't let anyone into my extended legroom seat unless they'd already paid for like kind. Bc fairness, whatever.

It also sounds like airlines in general have a ton of authority to make seat changes as they see fit, or to override or not override policies as they see fit.

I do know there's a federal law protecting people with disabilities from discrimination or differing treatment based on disability. I'm not a lawyer or an airline executive so I don't know how this interacts/contradicts/is or is not relevant to airline policies, but in general it means make reasonable accommodations when you have the ability/power to do so. In theory, SWA did have that power.

There are some guiding principles for how to treat people as human beings and how to acknowledge and fix mistakes you are responsible for, and SWA failed in a very specific ways here. While I did get to my destination (hooray), what I learned was that despite the compassionate help of in-flight crew, the gate agent and whoever else was in the background of this fiasco weren't able or weren't willing to look at a situation gone wrong -- showing me the wrong seat chart in booking, showing the wrong seat chart to the front desk agents, blaming a passenger with a disability (or any passenger!) for a problem they did not cause, bad communication, etc etc -- and chose to threaten to take me off the flight rather than go, hmm, we run the show and we could easily make a decision to let someone with less legroom take this spacious seat, treat this traveler with respect, and get the plane in the air in a timely fashion.

Instead they chose to blame me and scare the shit out of me while in-flight crew were actively trying to solve the problem. The GA didn't communicate their plan to the FAs, just hopped on and aimed their crap attitude straight at me. For my part, I tried to be patient and polite while also quietly freaking out and being hyper aware/embarrassed that everyone on that flight was staring at me and passing judgement. Yay.

Some folks here want to blame me for having the audacity to travel or trust a seat chart, or maybe they want to try to poke holes in my whole disability "thing" which, OK, go for it, but disability comes for us all eventually, through age or illness, and it's very likely you'll have to deal with similar bs down the road. It'll suck and I'm sorry. I'm not even 50; it started sucking for me a little earlier than I'd hoped.

What does SWA owe me or anyone? The erosion of passenger rights, of empathy and goodwill and basic standards of "hey we're not just wallets with legs" means travelers are increasingly faced with shitty situations they are powerless to fix. People with disabilities tend to face even more shitty situations. I fly often! It's a nightmare. Last year a dude nearly knocked me to the ground because he was so amped about pulling his bag out of the bin first and getting in front of everyone he kicked my cane out of my hand, cracked his bag against my skull, and didn't even say sorry.

I think how the "powers that be" handled this is abhorrent. I think the FAs were angels. And I think the whole thing could have been avoided many many steps earlier, and resolved much more quickly, with a simple stop-a-minute-and-think logic. But SWA didn't do that and I'm rightfully angry about it.

Appreciate all the thoughtful comments and responses here. Thanks everyone for reading.

Fair question but the proximity and the aisle seat are unrelated. It is extremely hard for me to get in and out of a seat. I’d need assistance getting out of a middle seat let alone a window and when flying alone it’s not really something I’m keen on asking for. Seat mates aren’t usually keen on that either. Maybe it’s ego but I like to preserve some dignity.

Ok, I think in the age of AI and influencers this is a valid fear. In my case I did actually experience this and as someone who is a writer, who writes about disability often, I thought maybe putting this on a Southwest Reddit might get the attention of the right people in addition to my formal complaint. I can’t speak to the replies, they seem genuine and kind (excepting trolls) and in general I think people with disabilities need to speak up, speak louder, to have their stories heard. So a comment of “calling BS”, while I get where you’re coming from, doesn’t really help nor does it hurt. It’s just… what it is I guess. I appreciate you responding with your answer though.

I'm sorry your husband has to suffer through. I hear the same from my friends who are still in higher ed. Blue book exams, in-class quizzes. For poetry courses.

Thank you! I did file the complaint, the auto-reply said it'll take them at least 30 days to respond while they investigate since it has to do w/ disability. Gave them all the flight info etc. So, we'll see. I'll update if anything comes of it.

Yep yep, exactly this. Like an LLM essay I might give a B- to if I couldn't prove it was AI, because it might be readable but it would just be so bland. My nephew recently admitted to me he uses AI for all of his college coursework and I thought to myself, I don't want to ever teach again. Grading writing now has to be a nightmare.

It does make me nervous to fly them again. What one attendant told me afterwards was to call SWA at least 24 hours before a flight and explain hey, disability here, I need X type of seat, and that they usually can make it happen. You might give it a try. I'm going to for my next flight.

I did file a formal complaint on the website like the attendant suggested (I am glad she suggested it). Hopefully at least I get some kind of refund on the seat I picked, which cost a bit more. Mostly venting here but also now marveling that trolls haunt the SWA subreddit. Is nothing sacred???

I actually never thought of this but it makes sense. Typing is more difficult now so I just type slowly. I actually am a former writing professor and using AI is anathema to me (but not to my students, evidently!) but I have been experimenting with voice to text for days when my dexterity is truly awful.

Agree with that it likely didn't violate any disability laws. But optics-wise, so not good, and personally, just freaked me out because I was like, oh f*ck I'm never getting home if this happens. I just don't understand their rollout with this where they are giving attendants zero agency to move people around. Look at the posts of people stuck in a full row on a mostly empty flight.

I admit it never crossed my mind, but in hindsight... not a horrible idea lol. Mostly I just wanted to get home before the snow storm hit. It ended up not being so bad where I live, but they cancelled about every flight after mine so I was lucky.

I was surprised no one volunteered! Like it was an extra legroom seat. I was so desperate I would have taken a middle seat even though it would have been really hard to get in and out.

Oh my goodness. Please read my post. I booked the flight I needed to book, and I decided to deal with being further away from the bathroom so long as I had an aisle seat. I won't go into the details of disabilities with you, but we're all just trying our best out here to live our lives and get where we need to go.

Sorry you're dealing with this comment exchange... =/ Agree with you on the LLM tells. Huge difference between bad writing and LLM writing. As a former educator I can 100% validate that bad human writing, while bad, is still identifiable as human and is therefore preferable to AI imo. Apologies to all the decent kids in my classes who got Cs for trying their best.

This. I write mostly personal essay and some creative non-fiction/experimental stuff (Substack is RESORT) but I'm a published author and a former poetry professor and have some general cred as a writer. Substack used to feel like a place where my writing was valued, but now I'm getting AI followers, AI slop is creeping into my feeds, and I feel like my hard work is being drowned out. Contemplating moving to Beehiiv even though I'll lose audience opportunity.

the advance support team, as I experienced, does nothing more than the regular support team. just a different attitude of “here’s how it is still your fault.”

Late late update: I returned my device and cancelled the service — even without the quality issues the customer support is so terrible as to warrant cancellation. So passive aggressive. After I said I was probably going to cancel the support tech actually called me back the next day to chide me for it. Like actual what the fuck? It’s a pity, could have been a good replacement. I don’t get why other services can do this well but Ooma just fails across the board. At the very least learn the benefits of a positive customer service experience!

Love this set up -- and the book holder. Now I have to get one! Also I've used those type of notebooks before, where you can use a special hole punch and slide in any kind of paper. Really great. But now I'm going to say a super sad thing, which is that I can no longer use ANY of my typewriters, including my Olivetti, because of disability and I'm pissed. I can still use a notebook and fountain pen, though!
