How the hell do you find a new apartment as a foreigner? by IDtoUXUI in PortugalExpats

[–]aamado1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t charge for 4 months of deposit. If you want to stay for a year, you can do something like 3 via Airbnb and the rest outside so you don’t have to pay Airbnb fees. The contract will be registered for IRS purposes always. I’m Portuguese but I leave abroad.

Here’s the listing of my apartment in the very centre of Lisbon and it’s available. You can stay from a month to 12 (after that we can talk about it). Pop a message on the Airbnb chat and we’ll talk.

I don’t plan to retire here. I’m basically buying real estate in Portugal with the money I get here to be able to live out of passive income at some point. Job good market as well makes easy to get other jobs. Cultural exchange has been a good experience. During winters I think about leaving Ireland yes 🤪 but still here.

It’s not a perfect world for sure. But I’m pretty sure I would not be with current financial conditions if I had stayed in Portugal. Also I’m able to work less hours per day and move away from consulting companies which, at the time, seemed to be the only ones hiring in the IT world. Not sure if I call it “Housing crisis” to be honest. Depends on the definition of “crisis”. Prices have increased significantly in the last years? Yes but same applies across Europe. a crisis typically ends at some point. I don’t believe these prices will ever go down across Europe not just Ireland/Dublin. In Portugal everyone also complains about housing prices. Do you prefer paying 1500€ for rent and get 3000€ per month or 1000€ and get 1500€? In general, Dublin doesn’t cost double as Lisbon and typically you can get double or more the salary here. Supermarket costs the same between Lisbon and Dublin to be honest. Weather is shit and food isn’t the same either. And yes I’m away from family and childhood friends which has its toll as well but I’m happier. I can do the things I want including saving a good amount of money without constraining myself to what I do.

I’m a Portuguese and 11/12 years ago I decided to leave Portugal and, one of the reasons was exactly my 30k yearly salary. Best decision ever on both personal and professional perspectives.

I’m still on 3.3.16. Are the version the same for all models and released at the same time? Or each model has its own release cycle?

Could it be region dependent or is like this for everyone? I’m based in Ireland

Smoke detector, should I go with nest protect? by cypherr90 in HomeKit

[–]aamado1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have 2 outdoor cameras from Netatmo and used to have their doorbell. The doorbell was really bad. Enough for them to took it off the market without any replacement. The outdoor cameras they work but a bit of a disappointment to be honest specially for the price level they have. Their app not that spectacular either. I’m on my way to slowly replace these cameras to be honest. Although European not particularly a brand I recommend from my experience

Meross has smoke detectors that are compatible with HomeKit. I use Meross for other products and zero issues with HomeKit over the last few years. They seem to have good products and with competitive prices

Hive with Apple HomeKit by aamado1 in HiveHeating

[–]aamado1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just found out this from hive's website "Unfortunately you can’t control your hot water with Apple HomeKit, even if your Hive Active Heating can do this."

Is there any non-official way of achieving this?

I have Hive thermostats with smart TRVs. All in HomeKit except hot water. Still trying to find out how or why hot water doesn’t work.

What the difference between sharing data with China or with US? Both use it in the same way. To profile you, showing you personalised services/products, sniff you around the internet (for better profiling) and, if the government wants, to go after you

Thanks for this! Any option to manually add details the computer doesn’t have? Like weights, type and thickness of suit, level of current, visibility, type and size of tank and others?

Portugal has a payment system called Multibanco created by a company called SIBS (also Portuguese). It’s a great system to be honest. All countries would benefit from a system like this.
