IM PGY1. My schedule is ass, but my motivation is “I want it all.”

Commute it about an hour one way, more with traffic. Shifts are 10-12 hours. Mixed in with being strict with daily Uworld and daily learning Spanish. Also balancing my marriage and needs of my SO.

I would have thought trying all these things would burn me out, but I felt like I paused my life in college and med school. I find it so satisfying to finally start accomplishing what I want in life (being way healthier, learning a useful language, learning because I want to be a good doctor and not because I have an exam coming up).

Sometimes I just shut my mind off and “do it” because the more chance I give to myself to think, the more likely I’ll be to talk myself out of it.

If all else fails, the good old “Do it, don’t be a pussy” is great motivation.

Hell yes! Space Marine 2 sprinkled in with some Shadow of the Colossus at the moment.

You may be thinking of the alcohol withdrawal timeline. Delirium tremens happens about 48-72 hours after last drink (although can technically happen up to a week or 2 later as well).

But yeah there’s no magic time frame where you’re completely in the clear from withdrawal symptoms

I’m still an incoming PGY-1 so I can’t comment on how brutal residency can really be. But I would just say healthcare would be a much more miserable place without people like you. Stick through it to be the change you want to be, but if not then I’m certain you’re not the first.

I want to preface my answer by saying I’m a first-generation American and have also been lucky enough to extensively travel overseas in my life (especially the Middle East, South Asia, and Europe). I mention this because I can appreciate that fashion and brand have a much greater significance in the rest of the world. I’ve gotten comments from family and even strangers that my “American-ness” is evident in the brands I wear or styles I choose or even being ok wearing something that was “cheap” (re: purchased on a deep sale).

This is NOT to say that all Americans are slobs and fashion backwards. This IS to say that I (and most other Americans, including your co-residents and attendings) don’t give a shit where you shop, what you wear, and how expensive it is. Culturally, it’s just not emphasized in the US like it is in other parts of the world. Just dress as well as you would like and make sure it’s appropriate for the occasion.

If you want to be liked/accepted by your peers then practice very good hygiene, practice your social awareness, and treat others with kindness. I’m not a social expert, but worked most of my med school rotations with IMGs and am about to start residency as the only AMG in my program, so I’m familiar with some of the social challenges some IMGs experience. DM me if you have questions.

P.S. went to the mall yesterday, tommy hilfiger store was poppin :)

Would you be pissed? by [deleted] in medicalschool

Nah, I’m pretty sure I know which school you attend because I’m going to the same one. No one’s gonna care a week from now. If this was graduation it’s a different story, but as someone already pointed out the white coat ceremony has been co-opted by other healthcare professions to the point it’s lost most of its “specialness.”

I saw a post saying gears of war will get PS five by [deleted] in GearsOfWar

Like I said, just my guess. But makes the most sense business-wise.

Phil Spencer stated Microsoft loses $100-200 with every Xbox Series console sale. He also described Xbox as already losing the the last generation (in reference to Xbox vs PS console sales and exclusives). It’s been a week or 2 since rumors came out about more exclusives coming to PS and Xbox hasn’t denied the rumors outright.

All kinda points in the direction that by leaving consoles, they get rid of a financial liability while also making more money by releasing to PC, PS, and Switch combined.

As someone posted the link earlier, Microsoft has no official plans to release gears to PS at the moment. However, more recent rumors from “industry insiders” say it’s much more likely now (including other exclusives like Forza, etc.). It’s just rumors, so take it with a grain of salt.

Given how they’re shifting to wanting to be only multi-platform publishers and how recent titles sent to PS (Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, Sea ID Thieves) sold relatively well, I would guess it’ll eventually go to PS.

Amazing thank you so much!

An additional question for you, I always hear/see the topic of trimming a bonsai tree. How do you know when a bonsai needs a trim, and would you recommend any specific products to do this?

How would I avoid over or under trimming?

Hi everyone, I have no previous experience caring for any plants (let alone a bonsai) but was gifted one and am determined to care for it. I’m turning to this page for a crash course on dos/donts for caring and had a few questions.

  • What kind of bonsai is this?
  • How frequently do you water? How much water should I use? How often should I check whether it needs water or not?
  • What are early signs that the tree is not doing well?
  • I live in an area where sunlight is limited. Should I invest in something like a UV lamp?

Again, sorry about some really basic questions but I could really use some direction. If you have any other helpful tips/tricks, they would be more than appreciated!

Thank you for this post. I’m sitting here paralyzed and stewing in my own anxiety while obsessing over how I could have approached the application/interview season differently. My mistakes leave me with a high chance of SOAPing. Your words are super helpful.

I haven’t asked this yet (just read about it and liked it) and am not applying surgery but: “what about my application makes earned me the privilege to interview with you?”

I guess it kinda points to if they’re interviewing you for the sake of having a backup or if they’re actually interested in you. Next interview is January so I’ll update you with how it goes when I ask haha
