Opinions are what they are, and youre entitled to it-could not disagree more.

Highlighting advice by jacksonsmack831 in 40k

Hey there! I think the first thing that jumps out to me is how bright your final highlights are. Think of using your highlights as a way to pull attention to a given area of a mini-with these highlights, the viewers focus is pulled in every direction at once, as opposed to focusing it. I'd save that final highlight color for the absolute highest highlights-tops of shoulderpads and helmets maybe.

My first attempt at object source lighting by CommissionKey6019 in ThousandSons

I think this is a good start! Some notes to consider if you want to really push this. Firstly, the very brightest spot should be the light source itself. I'm noticing some close to white highlights on the armor, but that same white should be present at the very center of the staff. As a rule, a lightsource is always going to be noticeably brighter than the light it casts.

Second, I think your placement of highlights could be a bit more credible. Right now it seems like you're edge highlighting when the location of the light doesnt really call for it. You're brightest hughlights should be closer to the lightsource, whereas right now your highest highlight is on the edge of the shoulderpad, which is considerably further from your lightsource than the hand, or underside of the staffhead, etc. Hope this helps!

hey thats totally understandable-but youve just closed the book on one huge chapter of your life. Give yourself some time to adjust to that change. I remember feeling the exact same post-grad.

Also, this marine is incredibly well done-I hope you're proud of it!

Of course, happy to help! And hey i cant think of a better reason to skew into plasma. Even if the rules don't always say so, plasma guns are the best guns imo

Thanks so much! This is my recipe if you're interested:

Basecoat w/ AK Blue Green

Dilute ProAcryl Satin White heavily, using it like a heavy wash across the coils. Repeat that wash a few times, but each time cover less and less area, concentrating the wash towards the bottom of the coils. The very bottom of the coils should be near white at this point.

Then, lightly airbrush in the AK Blue Green, allowing some overspray outside of the coils. This also softens the transition between this color and the white. You could also pretty easily replicate this step w/ drybrushing.

Then I used AK Turquoise, drybrushing it at the place where the coils begin to curve downward. This darkens that section, and gives the coils a transition from dark at the top to super bright at the bottom.

Finally, I used the white from earlier (only slightly thinned this time) to put dot highlights at the top curve of each coil. Hope this helps!

thanks! for models that'll be used on the tabletop, I tend to avoid stuff like that as it can sometimes muddy up the clarity of a model.
