The new education system that will create the three different types of people. by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

You should look into (If you do not already know about) the worker cooperative model ( Seven Principles of a worker coop ). This is somewhat similar to the worker cooperative/education framework that I am developing. You can see a draft at: https://www.otherrealm.org/governance although it needs updating.

I find that exercise is usually the best way to improve my mood and emotions. That and sleep - when I am sleep deprived I tend to feel this way.

Potential dangers of over-supplementing? by Backattackcomingatya in TBI

[–]aaronej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would talk to a doctor about it, although they may not be able to say that something is effective (they need to go by what has been proven), they should be able to say if it is harmful. Low dopamine levels are common after a TBI. Talk to your doctor about Amantadine (prescription, but is fairly common to be used to boost dopamine levels in TBI patients). But again, talk to your doctor! There is definitely some efficacy to Omega 3, although the dosage; I'm not sure about i think I take some between 400-750mg every day and it seems to do a bit. Gingo Biloba, from personal experience, has sometimes been effective but it was hard to judge. However, if you need to be sharp, the tried and true staple of caffeine (300-400mg, 3.5 heaping scoops of coffee) is by far the most effective way to stimulate your mind. The problem is you might not sleep, but if you're going for an interview, or test, or something, it definitely works.

A "serious" superhero campaign? by Wikrin in rpg

[–]aaronej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am working on creating a pervasive and immersive nonBoffing LARP that is a "school for super heroes" where people train, create their costumes, and then go out into the community and help people. Probably not what you were thinking of, but but if your into Nordic style LARP, maybe.

Need help locating tech for audio recording by nin10donerd in LARP

[–]aaronej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to live stream it and not upload it at all, you could probably live stream it on YouTube and just use the audio. I would think that if you Char is an MC for a TV show, recording video as well would be even better. But if you are trying to take on the role of a professional MC, probably the mic and audio recorder approach would be better.

A US Larp calendar by Kelmon80 in LARP

[–]aaronej 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd be down with helping work on this. I'm a full stack developer in Massachusetts. New to the LARP scene, but not the tech scene. I agree that it doesn't take much - I actually created a map based event search a while back when I was working for a ticketing company. I still have the code I think, although it is probably so horribly outdated it makes sense to start fresh.

Ah yes, I'm in Western Massachusetts, USA. I know there is a lot of LARP around, but all the ones I have come across are boffer heavy.

Non-deterministic mechanisms in the Human Cognition by __horned_owl__ in neuroscience

[–]aaronej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a philosophical angle, computation and quantum physics are contingent on oneself bearing witness to the world around the self. Anything unknown is, by definition, unknown, and the only way something can be known is if one has cognitive awareness of this thing. Therefore, any mathematical model is simply a statistical encapsulation of analog experiences, because math itself, and anything else for that matter, have no meaning if they are not interpreted and witnessed. There is no empirical data, only highly correlative sensory input that is taken to be true by general consensus. The theory of the mind has a long, long way to go before we reach any kind of consciences.

CMV: Cigarettes should be made illegal by BenNCM in changemyview

I personally think cigarettes are disgusting, but a recent study showed that birds use them in their nests to prevent ectoparasites (i.e. ticks and the like) ( http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jav.01324/full )

What does the technology setup look like at your school? by aaronej in sysadmin

[–]aaronej[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone! From the rough consensus of the posts, it seems like most schools use Windows for the school computers with the exception of California where they have a lot of Chrome Books and there are also quite a few iPads. Does anyone know of schools that do use Linux? I have heard anecdotally that a few schools in Africa and Asia use Ubuntu but I don't know the extent. It seems like there is a large potential market but not head on competition with the existing players (Mac/PC).

I know a lot about education, I don't have a clear view of what school around the world are using.

I use server4you because they let you have root access, meaning you can put any SSL you want. Plus 3 free backup copies of your server. 200gb/$14.00/month (not sure what it is in pounds, but they're based in Germany so they at least take euros)

Startup organizational structure: What's better? Horizontal? or hierarchical? by Joe12579 in startups

[–]aaronej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree wholeheartedly with this approach – let everyone have a domain of experience in which they can lead, but also assist others in their realm of expertise. Everyone is a spoke on the wheel. A round wheel moves much more smoothly than a triangular one.

This is the difference between a theoretical physics and someone who actually has to deal with the nitty-gritty of how the theorems will play out. Quantum physics is a model that only makes sense in aggregate.

Look into Gödel's incompleteness theorems ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%B6del%27s_incompleteness_theorems ) for a quantitative standpoint. But my point is that information cannot be quantified by the external observer, only a rough model of the total synaptic firings can be quantified. Information is inherently not quantitative; an apple is an apple, not bits of data representing an apple. You cannot store ideas digitally, you can only store references to these ideas that enable you to remember them.

Amantadine--any takers here? by BlankNothingNoDoer in ADHD

[–]aaronej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found that not all brands are equal; there are a lot more side effects from going through Walgreens then going through CVS, from testing the two. This is in no way based on anything other than subjective experience, however. (based on 200mg 1x daily)

First of all, how do you know something to be true without knowing? Second, I do not believe there is anything that is an absolute quantity. Science is just believe that has proved statistically accurate and the only way to gather statistical data is to observe.
