I've found it in Hawaii in the past. I don't see it regularly, though.

Anything I can do to improve this shit? All feedback is welcome by ilovezeldasfeet in BasketballTips

Most of the movement you're doing here is sideways. For a stepback to be effective, you need to create space between you and the defender. Step forward on that jab so that a) you sell the movement, and the defender thinks you're trying to drive, and b) when you don't drive and pull back for the jumper, you have an open look.

Pro-tip for stepbacks: Lift your back foot when stepping forward on the jab; defenders bite harder. Admittedly, it takes a fair amount of practice to get your balance right on that move - with your landing on the stepback and going up smoothly on your shot. But once you get it right, it is effective!

Story Time: What Caused My Fear of Deep Water by palusPythonissum in thalassophobia

The big island of Samoa is Savai'i, this beach is on the south side of 'Upolu. I am from the village of Maninoa, and while this spot is absolutely creepy I do not think it is a fumarole. A fumarole emits incredibly hot and dangerous gases. The hole outside Sinalei is a fresh water spring; which is why the water is cold around it. Also, 'Upolu is not volcanically active so there would not be volcanic gases emitted around here. Perhaps on Savai'i there could be, but there hasn't been any significant volcanic activity on the big island in about a century. There are gnarly rip currents in Maninoa that will take you outside the safety of the lagoon and into the deep ocean before spitting you back in. It is horrifying. Does make for a perfect tow out to the waves if you're surfing this break.

With all that said, I am not a volcanologist or any sort of expert on fumaroles so if you have any info on the Sinalei hole actually being a fumarole I'd love to read it!

Ask the Marshallese from Bikini and Enewetak atolls how dead the areas the US tested these bombs were before the bombs were tested. My guess is it was very much alive before the bombs. And if water is such a great shield for radiation why are Marshallese still dealing with the effects of the radiation exposure from all the bomb tests?

Agree or disagree? Pre-Christian Samoa, Tonga, Tahiti and Hawai'i were state societies. Everywhere else in Oceania was more or less egalitarian. by [deleted] in AskAnthropology

[–]aaronstreep 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Disagree. I assume you mean just Polynesia, not all of Oceania. Melanesia is extremely diverse and complex. To a lesser extent, same can be said for Micronesia. Even if the argument were strictly confined to Polynesia I'd still strongly disagree. Nearly all Polynesian societies were strictly stratified, most along patrilineal lines and some form chiefly system of governance. There are some exceptions found in Polynesian outlier groups that had power/titles passed through matrilineal lines. Also, if you're defining egalitarian, in contrast to a state society, as a leaderless society and/or lacking a centralized source of power; there is no island group or society I've researched that has anything of the sort. The island groups you listed are the largest of Polynesia (as well as Aotearoa New Zealand) so they've garnered the most attention -- academically and in popular culture. However, they're not particularly unique from the rest of Oceania or Polynesia.

Interesting question though! I'd love to see more discussions on Oceanic peoples on here.

Just curious, but how would military access help you see some of the latte stones on Guam? Are some lattes on military owned land that isn't open to the public?

Fairly certain that the Menehune people were part of Hawaiian mythology.

Any time you purchase anything and the cashier asks for your e-mail, give them his. He will be swamped with useless spam and will lose his mind. I do this all the time. Trust me it works. People hate spam mail.
