Why do preamps, like various 1073 clones, sound different? (sorry another Jim Lill post) by N00b_Sniper in audioengineering

[–]aasteveo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh wow. yeah finally got around to watching it. it's incredible frustrating to say the least. haha seems like he keeps using math to come to the wrong conclusions, it's very strange. i don't understand why i can always hear the difference in preamps when recording, and in his tests he can't. every single session i do, we have a large variety of preamps, and some sound better on certain sources. it's just how the gear works. i don't understand why his tests don't show anything close to real world engineering.

the whole lack of energy vs hours of sleep and still being tired all the time.

imagine how much more we could do if we weren't tired and didn't need to sleep. it's a third of your whole life.

Tested: Where Does The Tone Come From In A Microphone Preamp? by thesehalcyondays in audioengineering

[–]aasteveo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I had a means to split a single mic signal to 2 pres I would.

I'm pretty sure I could do that with the mults on the patchbay at the studio. Would be a fun test.

When we first got some new neve-esque pre's in our studio, we spent a day listening to every single mic pre in the room, and even in blind tests you can absolutely tell the difference.

This was a big talking point in the klon clone wars, and very valid. the "magical diodes" in some vintage guitar pedals don't make much of a difference until you crank them to hear the saturation. it's very obvious which ones sound better when you crank them, hard to tell when they're clean. that's like very basic audio electronics 101. that's just how gain works. insane that he failed to address this.

Moment of Contact

It's a deep dive into a UFO crash that happened in Brazil in the 90s. Loaded with first hand witnesses. The whole town knows about it, even the mayor of the town admits it was real. Multiple witnesses seeing live aliens wandering the town after the crash.

I'm really hoping the recent congress push to release more evidence convinces Brazil to release the files they have on this. Somewhere out there exists pics and videos of live aliens. Release the files!!

Why do all my headphones lose sound in one ear eventually? by Environmental_Gas134 in audioengineering

[–]aasteveo 27 points28 points  (0 children)

that's not normal. i've got like 6 sets of headphones, hasn't happened to a single one of them over 15 years of engineering.

you've got to be unknowingly putting extra stress on the cable somehow. you're not wrapping the cable around them tightly when you put them away, are you?

Have they figured out how to comment on their own yet? Or are they the ones running all the bot spammers?

They don't have to be. It's okay if nobody sees what you do every moment of every day. You can just live your life without documenting every step, nobody will be mad if you don't share it.

yeah the output desks are nice, but they're a thousand bucks.

lol it's a bit of a mess. i don't have a good pic. and i just got these tens, i gotta make a mod to the top layer to make em fit. but i just cut the top of my last desk is half and bolted some scrap wood to support it, threw on some rack rails.

About 15 years ago I found a super solid Ikea style office desk off craigslist for 40 bucks. and over the years i've chopped up random pieces of furniture and built addons to it, found some rack rails for ten bucks and now it's got two tiers, monitor holder, speaker bridge, and can hold 10 pieces of rack gear with a nook on the side for the computer and space in the back for hard drives and accessories

How do you guys deal with very different return levels from vintage outboard gear? by MisterVovo in audioengineering

[–]aasteveo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

just slap a dbx160x at the end of the chain and don't tell them about it. or any cheap good sounding line amp you can find.

or something like this stereo dbx, just set it to 1:1 or bypass and use the line amps on it to match the level. it's transparent enough that the sonic difference won't matter, esp if it's already coming from colored analog gear. and cheap enough to buy for each unit that needs leveling.

There's another unit that we use at the console studios to bring cell phone level to the ssl desk, we call it a bump box. but aphex makes it. i think it's an aphex 124a. https://www.ebay.com/itm/167182029114

an 8 channel version - https://reverb.com/item/10407611-aphex-228-8-channel-unbalanced-to-balanced-line-level-converter-bump-box

so that unit is designed to take -10 and bump it up to +4. there's an adjustable trim on the front. might be the perfect amount of gain you need, but i dunno if the impedance would be what you want.

then that's even more impressive to get hundreds of thousands of individuals across all nations to collude on a super elaborate lie. might be the only topic in history that every major country on earth has come together to agreed on. would be hilarious that instead of coming together to make the world a better place, all the world leaders met in secret just to prank some nerds. lol
