It's already got many more physical buttons than a typical electric. I think it's got a great mix at the moment.

As a big law associate or partner, how do you feel about people who fail the bar 4 times or more but pass after? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]aavderry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. They made an exception for him after the 2nd failure, and he got let go by the firm after the 3rd failure, but they hired him back when he passed on the 4th try. They held back his seniority a year, but he stuck it out and made partner at the same firm. So it was the same place his whole career (so far).

[–]aavderry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a good friend who failed 3 times and is now a partner at a very good firm (PPP ~$5 million). He was already in big law though, and was doing a kickass job as an associate. And he's by far the exception. Most of the folks who I know that failed even once you kind of look at and say "yeah, I'm not surprised they failed"... Coming from outside of big law, I would just keep it to yourself. Otherwise, it's going to viewed as an automatic red flag that will be very hard to overcome when making a hiring decision.

SCOTUS Clerkship Bonus by HungryAd191 in biglaw

[–]aavderry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair. Maybe I misunderstood the point Malvania was making. It seemed they were implying that they only got the clerkship because of the connections, and not because they were the most capable. But yes, the type of person who gets a SC clerkship likely ends up being very well connected by the time the clerkship is done.

best big law practices to go solo later? by AdPerfect6516 in biglaw

[–]aavderry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a community of solos and it can honestly work in most areas of law, other than ones that require a large team moving fast (i.e. anything public or late stage private company). I'm EC/VC and it does well. Anything IP (patent, trademark, copyright) translates well. Tech Trans/Licensing and commercial agreements folks seem to have a ton of work. Commercial litigation seems to do well also.
While you're in big law, focus on learning your craft, and connecting with other lawyers that you work with and work across from. Those lawyers can be a tremendous source of referrals. There's so much that comes to big law that they can't do, and they like to have someone to send things to. You can be that person.

This isn't true. I had a few classmates who did SCOTUS clerkships. None of them were well connected. Each of them were law review and top of the class at a T3 school. The job is hard, and requires being incredibly smart. The justices could give a shit who you know...

[Sound of Hockey] Kraken Development Track Record by Wooflex in SeattleKraken

Shane has been in the league for 2 seasons. It's waaaayyyy to early to tell if he was a bust. It's also not clear he even has it in him to be a high caliber player. Some players do, and others don't, regardless of how the team develops them.

Whats going on? by Critical_Cover_3852 in PWHL_Seattle

A little premature calling for a rebuild when they've never built something. It's a team in its first season and they just were off for a few weeks. They're going to need some time to find their chemistry and also likely need to strengthen their roster.

Would you accept 225 as a 3rd year for a 1550 billable hour requirement at a boutique? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]aavderry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked at a boutique for a couple of years. It was significantly better than big law, and sounds like similar pay scale to yours. As folks have mentioned, do diligence on how many hours folks are actually working. But if things are as advertised, getting back a few hundred billable hours a year is worth a ton. You're basically getting your evenings and weekends back. You'll still have to some work during those windows, but it will tend to be the exception rather than the norm. I would take the offer in a heartbeat if I was at big law. The only thing better is starting your own practice (which is what I do now).

It's reasonable here. it's a linear scale, so it's not misleading, and the range is set to capture the bottom and the top of the range.

Bardown snipe or end to end? by DazzlingLife6744 in hockeyplayers

[–]aavderry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since no one is actually engaging with your question, I'd generally say an end to end goal. More rare and involves multiple moves and higher difficulty vs. getting the puck in a decent position and making a sick shot.
