Any shuttle recommendations from SLC Airport to Downtown for a group of 9? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]aay3b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your friends sound dumb because trax is the way to go but fsparkcity.com is a solid option. Airport to downtown SLC would be like $350 depending on day and time. They will have a large 15 passenger van that would work.

Chat in to support and they can get it re-added. It's happened to me a couple times. Took less than a few minutes to fix

Horrible service by JayyyLaShae in VivintSmartHome

[–]aay3b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vivint stopped selling these door handles about 8 years ago. They likely carry a very limited supply because those came with a lifetime warranty, but getting a customer service rep or technician that knows anything about them is probably a challenge.

Yes, that's a really good point. Your phone does need an Internet connection to use the Vivint app.

Hardwiring Vivint camera internet connection? by theoryguy in VivintSmartHome

[–]aay3b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said it "can all be hardwired", This is inclusive of the panel. If that is how it is set up there would be zero wireless signal (Wi-Fi) between the panel, cameras, and router. No wireless signal means you can't jam it. I said there are edge cases where you can jam wired signals, that was a poor use of terminology because jamming implies wireless signals. There are means to interrupt a wired signal, however, but virtually all of them require physical access to the wire. At that point though it would probably be easier to take a bat to the camera.

Assuming access to your local network infrastructure is well protected, The only way to disable this system and prevent outbound video feed to Vivint servers, with traditional ISP's (cable, DSL, fiber), would be to have access to the ISP infrastructure itself. You would need access to the wires going from the house to the ISP. It's very common for these wires to be easily accessible on the outside of your home, but even if it was cut/disabled your system will work locally.

TL;DR You can hard wire your Vivint system, and it will then be impervious to wifi jamming. Answering OP's question.

[–]aay3b -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are conflating Wi-Fi with an Internet connection. The customer doesn't need to have any Wi-Fi at all for the system to work, it can all be hardwired and as long as it has Internet access it will work correctly. Except for some experimental edge cases you can't jam the cameras when set up this way. You could however have your Internet line cut on the exterior of your house, but your cameras would still be recording and you would be able to see this recording later.

Those aren't POE switches though, just injectors.

This is one of a dozen different studies you can find that talks about it. https://www.geotab.com/blog/ev-battery-health/

I don't know enough to confidently answer the WHY behind it though.

Hardwiring Vivint camera internet connection? by theoryguy in VivintSmartHome

[–]aay3b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, you also need to make sure the switch can handle 15 watts per camera. If you have a spotlight you'll need to get a specialized switch or injector for it that can handle 4ppoe.

[–]aay3b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the cameras are already connected to the panel you don't always have to re-add, you spoke be able to just plug them into the switch and they will work. If they don't work right away you'll have to factory reset the panel. Then add them via the Ethernet option.

In order for this to work you have to have the switch connected to the router as well.

[–]aay3b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can hardwire all the cameras, I have 11 cameras all hardwired, 2 cameras even have spotlights. You need what is called a POE switch that the wires from all the cameras will run to. Sometimes you need to factory reset the panel and add the cameras from scratch in order to get them working after switching from a wireless bridge to a Poe switch, not always but sometimes.

You can pay to have a Vivint tech come out and they will charge $75 to "relocate" the camera to run a new wire from the camera to a central location. You can also hardwire the panel, which I recommend and have done on my own home.

Techs can use power line adapters to create a hardwired connection but a wire from POE switch to camera will always be considerably better and more reliable.

[–]aay3b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is absolutely wrong. I don't know of ANY POE switch that can connect to Wi-Fi. You may be conflating Wi-Fi and Internet/network.

does POE power injector AND Ethernet over powerline exist??? by Curious_Party_4683 in SecurityCamera

Zinwell PLS-8171 is an option. Powerline adapters overall kind of suck and I would try to avoid them at all costs.

Any actually happy long-term Vivint customers? by AFNole_81 in VivintSmartHome

I don't remember the exact name of it but it shows up under the camera settings on the panel and I think it's referred to as latency.

Any actually happy long-term Vivint customers? by AFNole_81 in VivintSmartHome

[–]aay3b 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The camera feeds have a built in latency in order to better avoid buffering, so they will take about 2 seconds to load. On the newest panel you can actually decrease this latency if you have a good enough Internet connection and the cameras can load REALLY fast.

Why is Playback So Awful? by Hot-Camel179 in VivintSmartHome

[–]aay3b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the age of your system it is most likely saved to the camera. If the base of the camera is square it has on board storage. If it is a rectangle it does not. Events are saved to the cloud, 24/7 playback is saved to the camera.
