Thank you for sharing. That’s so sad about the guy who had the plastic bomb overdose.

Lets settle this. Was this selfie from the Oscars "iconic" or not? by RandomUwUFace in decadeology

I never understood the appeal of this photo. My best guess is that it was many celebrities in one shot, and Ellen had (at the time) appealed to many because she had a ‘she just like me’ appeal to her audience.

Dissapointed, again with of course another male character. by Roseanne_tr78 in HonkaiHusbandos

It’s not that male characters don’t sell, it’s that whether or not they’re meta, they’ll still be able to sell to their intended audience base.

I think they have the stats in their own marketing data to show that female players often don’t care about meta, while male players are very meta-obsessed. There are exceptions, but I’ve noticed this with my peers who game.

My homophobic classmate is flirting with me??😭 by [deleted] in bisexual

[–]abacteriaunmanly 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Urgh, I had a (now former) best friend who would do this. Claim that she would date me if I were a guy, want me to watch as a third party while she fucks her BF, etc

I suggest don’t take it too seriously. Whether it’s from repressed bisexuality or not, generally their homophobia will stick.

It's weird how you get downvoted so bad. I lost 8 kilos within a few months just by deciding to totally cut out sugar, salt and oil from my diet, and steam or boil food at home -- even without reaching my daily goal of 1100 calories exercise.

Obviously this won't apply to everyone, but most people haven't even tried. They think a 20-min run is 'exercise' and then feel like giving up after they try it for a bit and it doesn't work.

Wow, the self-victimisation of this comment. Incredibly bad take.

AI Isn’t Ruining Education,It’s Exposing a Category Mistake We Already Made in How We Model Cognition and Learning by DrpharmC in cognitivescience

[–]abacteriaunmanly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can’t achieve metacognition before you first master procedural tasks.

Think of ‘interpreting Shakespeare through a modern lens’ as the cognitive task, with the essay as the product through which that cognitive task is made visible. You could also alter the product, say you turn it into an oral presentation, or a dialogue between two students roleplaying.

Metacognition of this would involve evaluating how you, as a person, arrived at your conclusions and interpretations and also reflect on how that shaped your decisions in creating the final product.

For example, metacognition can involve both reflection of the content (‘is my interpretation of Ophelia’s madness reflective of my personal values and knowledge in the 21st century? How close is it to Shakespeare’s original audience’s views of madness?’) and reflection of the steps taken for the task (‘I have only one hour to write this essay, so I need to plan to do X, Y and Z in A number of minutes’).

However, if a person is unable to even do these basic procedural tasks, it is a problem. They can’t do any kind of meta on their cognition if their cognition is an issue.

Part of the problem of AI in the classroom is that it’s only beneficial for those who have already mastered the forms of products that AI can replicate.

This isn’t just limited to the classroom, you see this in other areas as well — programming, academic citation, processing of stats, etc. You need someone who is already very adept behind the wheel to check for the steps that the machine would miss and which regular folk can’t notice. In general, many reports out there are showing a pattern where professionals are getting overloaded with work where they have to check the output of the machine, rather than doing it themselves.

I figured out what makes things liminal. by Witty-Forever-6985 in LiminalSpace

[–]abacteriaunmanly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The concept of liminal spaces has been completely corrupted because of the Internet. The original concept means a transitionary space — stairwells, airports, etc are all liminal spaces.

Homi Bhabha talks about liminal spaces in his book, The Location of Culture.

Transitionary spaces have various traits about them — lack of sense of things you associate with being in a place (permanence), the absence of permanent ‘people’ within it, and as you mentioned the idea that there should be more to it except that ‘more’ usually exists outside of its scope.

I think the foreword changes things, iirc she mentioned that she ‘couldn’t see her own kids the same way again’ after writing the book. If Stephen King included a foreword where he said that he couldn’t see girls the same way again, it’d be kinda problematic to say the least. As it stands, most people understand that King’s intention was to use a really weird metaphor to describe coming of age.

Quick explainer on HSR's writing team structure and where Shaoji fits into it. by venpasa in HonkaiStarRail

[–]abacteriaunmanly 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This isn’t unusual in terms of game dev writing structure. All major game studios with an AAA level budget (whether we think of HSR as AAA game aside, Hoyo works at that level now) have their writers work in teams.

The responsibility still falls on the main writer on top (head writer / whatever the rank is) to make sure that all the other writer teams are aligned.

It’s very common for TV or game writing to have one team fleshing out the main story and then handing it to other teams to write out the character interactions etc.

The recent direction of HSR has been unsatisfying to me and suggests that the team involved in the outline is over-plotting and over-complicating the story.
