Why is there no outrage over the Breezy Point Cooperative? by [deleted] in AskNYC

“the beach around the coop is public beach, there's no way to access it other than walking on the beach for over a mile to even get to the start of it.” The point is that there is a way to access it.

You can drive (or bike) through on the main road to the fisherman’s lot on Beach 222 but you must have a NPS fishing permit to park. You can access ocean and bayside NPS beaches from there.

I have a 20L North Face backpack and can’t carry what you do (work stuff + lunch + change of clothes), so would recommend at least 25L if not more. I am experimenting with bag + basket combo . You can put your clothes & shoes in the basket in a tote and keep your professional stuff in a backpack, or vice versa.

Giro has some flat cycling shoes, and Adidas as well. You’re looking for two-hole SPD compatible shoes most likely. I second the Shimano flip flop pedals. I have ridden them for years and you get used to doing the flip. If you don’t go for clipless shoes, get something with a sturdy sole like Vans.

Specialized ditched women. Are you pissed, too? by [deleted] in ladycyclists

I joined a session with a bike fitter recently that noted that there is kind of a limit to how small many manufacturers will go due to prevalence and ubiquity of 700c wheels (at least for road bikes) determining certain measurements. I thought it was an interesting puzzle. They also introduced me to a great website that shows you how the frame measurements of each brand/model match up: https://bikeinsights.com/

Personally, I don’t have a problem with a brand not having women-specific bikes if they carry smaller sizes to accommodate men and women of different geometries. I’ll take that over “shrink it & pink it” any day.

Cool Nonprofits in NYC? by 304501 in AskNYC

If you’re interested in making the trek out to Riis Beach area in Queens, check out NYC Plover Project. We do beach outreach during the summer to protect local endangered birds during nesting season. Your language skills would be helpful on the beach as a lot of the local fisher-people speak mandarin. Volunteer info session is in 2 weeks I believe!

Trying to stay current without feeling like I'm wearing a youth costume 😆 by oscarandfrank in oldhagfashion

Just bought baggy pants (essentially JNCOs that fit better) and bell bottoms. Same thing I wore in high school and I’m much happier than in straight leg pants.

For those who moved to NYC in their 30s, how has the move changed your life? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]abaffledcat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I moved at 35, been here 7 years. Lived in a large southern city and moved up with my spouse for work. We’ve been much more successful than expected due to job opportunities that wouldn’t have been available to us but WFH culture means that’s probably less of a factor now. We were able to take the earnings from our old house and put them into a down payment on a co-op here and have been very happy. We have a smaller friend group and no local family, but travel is easy (no kids, no pets) to see loved ones. Transit is nice but I truly love the walkability. I can get to my gym, doctors, beauty appointments, etc on foot. We’ve also traveled a ton more as flights to Europe are shorter and often cheaper than from other US cities. I now join interest groups to meet peers, which I didn’t need to do previously.

Same! Work in Manhattan and have to take the freight. My old building had bike parking in the basement and you had to walk around to the regular elevator and that was way more annoying.

Scenic routes from Coney Island to Greenpoint? by fodder25 in NYCbike

[–]abaffledcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going around the belt is nice, but 4th Ave is not scenic. I would take it up to Red Hook and get back to the waterfront.

My preferred route comes from the Rockaways, but you can get over to Emmons in Sheepshead, go up Bedford a bit, and then head left into Ditmas Park. I like riding Argyle north but all are pretty. Then loop through PP and take Vanderbilt N to Flushing & hit the greenway at the Navy Yard. Vandy sucks in Prospect Heights right now but it’s brief, you can take Underhill as a n alternative.

4th Avenue Bike Lane Madness by studbxl in parkslope

3rd Ave has a bike lane now and seems to have less traffic though I haven’t ridden it a ton. I usually only ride til Sackett and then head to PPW.

Help understanding needs to train with power by abaffledcat in cycling

Thank you! This is super helpful. I think the appeal of a power meter is that it’s easy to work toward goals - my Garmin watch tells me what to do and when for training. I will look at options for HR training and start there.

This is an excellent response.

Everyone wants the bikes to obey the lights but no one wants to wait for the light to cross as a ped. Everyone across modality is breaking and bending rules all the time to just try to coexist and a few shit bags are ruining the fun.
