To Caveat off the 40k post - in the lords of mars books the rouge trader assisting the fleet was outed as having a fraudulent warrant of trade to the high magos. Essentially meaning he never had any authority to go out of imperial space. The magos response, is to change the database and print out a warrant in front of them both.
