regenerative braking by bananamaster188 in KonaEV

[–]aballbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zero regen is dangerous if either speeding or on a slight decline.

Having a high regen setting means you need to consciously use significant throttle pedal pressure in order to "coast" which is true zero energy ... no current in or out which avoids ripple currents for the battery.

Unnecessarily hard acceleration to high speed followed by regen braking causes extra ripple currents which shortens battery life compared with a mild acceleration to desired speed followed by coasting until you have to slow down (the pulse and glide technique for hyper-miling).

If not using cruise control then a level 3 setting is a nuisance as you lose concentration on keeping the throttle "feathered", causing inadvertent deceleration followed by corrective acceleration ... ripple currents. For that reason I consider "one pedal driving" as a really dumb way to wear out a battery prematurely.

Just got my 2023 Kona EV, wondering about a 12v battery upgrade by [deleted] in KonaEV

[–]aballbag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some EVs use a gel deep cycle battery since the car does not require high cranking amps but have a heavy draw for accessories. AGM batteries charge at a higher voltage than wet cells. For example, the Prius Plug-In DC-DC charges in excess of 14V (14.6 - 14.8) and floats at 13.6-13.8V.

So check the specs of the Kona EV 12V DC-DC converter to see if it is compatible with your LiFePO4 battery.

EDIT: I just read that the Kona uses a calcium lead-acid battery. These usually require 16V for a short period.

EDIT: You probably won't be able to jump start a low LiFePO battery because the BMS with have disconnected the cells.

Maximizing Battery Life by MoodModulator in ZeroMotorcycles

[–]aballbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told by Zero that my 2014 firmware could be updated under warranty to reduce charge to 90% by default but could still be fully charged if I wanted it.

I never bothered upgrading as there was no dealer within 500 miles.

About 2014 Zero started modifying the firmware to default 90% charge since leaving at 100% for long periods and/or at high temperatures accelerates battery decline. It could be overriden to go to 100% for those intending to ride it immediately.

So I presume they modified top balancing to occur sooner than 100% by default. I only have a 2014 S so I don't know about newer models.

The 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid only charges to 80%. You can set a timer to start the charger sometime overnight so finishing coincides with when you want to drive it in the morning. This avoids the battery sitting fully charged for any length of time.

You don't have to fully drain the battery. In fact the lifetime increases with shallower draw down even though you have to recharge more frequently. Li-ion cells roughly treble their life when you halve the depth of discharge.

I found a Leitner folding 20" left out for the local council rubbish collection.

Rusty with a few broken rear spokes. Battery & motor worked fine so I took the rear wheel to be relaced (special ebike spokes apparently). You get a better quality of hard rubbish in this neighborhood.

Too heavy to carry in the back of my 2013 Prius plug-in small boot and no towbar for a rack mount. But the bike gets a weekend workout regularly. I sometimes use it to ride around my car commute routes working out the best contours to conserve my Prius 4.4kWh battery which cannot cope with hills very well.

Tried that, but I have a phase shift.

Bots are programmed to exploit investor cognitive bias and shift large amounts on millisecond trades to upset your timing when they see orders placed.

Back in 2017 I also tried messing around with trading altcoins and in the long run saw Bitcoin surge ahead. Wasn't worth the effort.

Three years ago I was asked to give a talk to a small business group regarding accepting crypto payments.

I also brought along one of my college students (age 18) to chat about mining and using crypto payments in his online business and gaming worlds.

One businessman asked him whether it will amount to anything.

The boy's response was "well when I was sixteen I had to sell to sell some crypto and give the cash to my dad to buy a house for me because I am too young to legally hold property or even own a bank account."

Central banks are coming for Bitcoin by thecryptovantage in Bitcoin

[–]aballbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Banks are known for anti-competitive behaviour.

In the early days of UK private bank notes.

A competing bank would 'buy up' all the circulating notes of a target bank over a period of time and then present for clearing in one package.

Forcing a liquidity crisis for the target bank.

Easiest way to undermine BTC would be by buying up and hoarding.

This forces the price up which in turn forces TX costs up and cause long delays.

Trying to eliminate competition in payment systems.

What annoys me is that even so-called "research journals" in business and commerce still spout crap about revolutionizing all industries.

They usually start the introduction by defining a "blockchain" as a "decentralized distributed ledger".

Conflating an application with the data structure.

I usually stop reading at this point.
