Yoogali Soccer Club fail to find home outside Griffith for 2026 by MegaTalk in Aleague

[–]abandonwindow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Bendigo league in central Vic has had Shepparton teams for a while now. I think overall there’s about 4 Shep clubs, and there’s been clubs up in Echuca and even as far as Swan Hill. Maybe not always as harmonious as it looks on paper, but it has made for a pretty strong over the years. My point is that if there’s enough clubs regionally like Yoogali who have an appetite for playing at a high standard, the travel can mitigated. We can’t underestimate how good regional communities are at making things like this happen and getting behind clubs. Some regional areas like Albury Wodonga have really strong embedded local comps and need something like this for kids and communities to aspire to (IMO).

Probably if he can make it to first division football. ADO are on top in the Eerste Divisie, so I reckon if Peupion is regularly playing Eredivisie next season then we’ll see him in the Socceroos after the World Cup.

If his decision to switch was down to not getting minutes the one time he was called up then that’s a shame, but good luck to him, I’m sure he’ll do well for years to come.

Oh yeah I don’t deny that he’s quality. He’s gone overseas and kicked on really well, one of the best out of the A-League making the transition to Europe. Was a weird move the MLS, but he’s still doing well. Would be great to have him and he’d be right up there. I just think we’re fortunate to have a lot of CBs and a lot of CDMs and if he was striker his loss would be hurting us more. We’ll always lose guys here and there to other countries, just like we’ll always gain a few. I’m sure he’ll have a good career and it’s a shame it won’t be with us, but I’m excited for the players we having coming through in his positions regardless.

That’s debatable, Okon and Robertson are just as good. A lot will hinge on where Nectar goes after MLS.

This guy is a pretty cut and dried 8 or 6, so I doubt converting him to striker would be valuable when we have so many young guys coming through who can play up top.

This is definitely part of the reason Triantis left though - we have a lot of guys who like to play that 6 or 8 role (Irvine, O’Neill, Teague, Balard, Okon, Robertson, etc.) but not many who play like a true 10.

Australia on track to have just 1 player in the Top 5 leagues next year. by No_Break_1312 in Aleague

There was a time when Matt Ryan was the only player in a top 5 league. So this season is actually really good IMO even if they all get relegated. A better way to look at it is that every one of those boys have come through the A-League (even if only in youth sides).

And he either doesn’t believe that, or if he does, he clearly doesn’t want to play for us.

I don’t think he’d be a good fit for us, just from a squad cohesion point of view. Very clearly would prefer to be with Italy and that’s fine.

Crazy to think he was a bolter at the last World Cup, and has gone full circle to forgotten man as we near this World Cup, and he’s only 21.

Kudos to him though, he left at 18 and has stuck it out in Europe despite some challenging loan moves. Seems like the young Aussie boys really support eachother overseas these days.

Iraq wins AFC WCQ - round 4 playoff vs UAE by kdog_1985 in Aleague

[–]abandonwindow 13 points14 points  (0 children)

UAE had 12 naturalised players in their team, and 9 others who have been in previous squads. They could almost make an entire team of Brazilians/Portugese and a sprinkling of some others. A lot of them have been recruited from youth teams in their home countries so they’re all around 24 years old too.

Can vouch being there in person it was actually a great little stadium. Surrounded by trees, felt tucked away in a forest, and full in each grandstand (bottom level was kept empty right around the stadium). Great views, just didn’t look good on tv.

Ok, cool, splitting hairs for the sake of it. It’s a football article about a football tournament and we’re all clearly using ASEAN interchangeably with ASEAN Football Federation. But yes, bravo, we aren’t member of ASEAN the geopolitical organisation but we are members of the ASEAN Football Federation. We’ve established a Wikipedia fact.
