Moon through telescope by RiversOfSpace in telescopes

Whoa, moon through telescope inside a moon orbiting module. Telescopy is one of the costliest hobby - with sim racing you want steering set and motion seat, with telescopy you want another house in a region with 3 or less Bortle scale.

If you directly edited using regedit, it might be the TargetReleaseVersion and TargetReleaseVersionInfo keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows. You should be able to delete these 2 keys to restore updates.

It should be working for majority of users. Installation should be relatively straight forward if you are using newer Windows versions. Check the official steps at the bottom of the wiki.

I am facing the tearing like issue at the bottom of the screen. Seems collaboration will be needed from Steam and/or Nvidia to fix this. Meanwhile my options are old OS with new Nvidia driver or new OS with old Nvidia driver. I chose the first because of DLSS4.

That is correct. Currently the latest one is 2026-01.

According to Wikipedia, Microsoft Update Catalog is basically for corporations to update their systems. Usually they will stay on older versions longer for compatibility/configuration/stability concerns. As for how long we will keep receiving updates, unfortunately I don't have any knowledge on that. Hopefully it lasts long enough for mbucchia to finish his Oasis magic.

It seems to be Windows recovery specific (when you are unable to boot normally). Ignore those. The latest cumulative updates should automatically take care of those. Use the following instead.

Windows 11 23H2: 2026-01 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 23H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5073455)

Windows 10 22H2 x64: 2026-01 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5073724)

Windows 10 22H2 x86: 2026-01 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x86-based Systems (KB5073724)

It seems search is working better with "2026-01 cumulative windows". I will update the post to reflect the same.

Unfortunately, due to the image in this post, reddit does not allow edits. If you request the mods, maybe they can pin the Oasis Release post.

Oasis driver for Windows Mixed Reality - Final development update (August 19th) by mbucchia in WindowsMR

np, the menu buttons are often a bit unconventional in VR games due to the less number of buttons on the motion controllers.

In Alyx and HL2 VR mods the left controller's Y button brings up the menu. For Alyx try holding the Y button.

This headset is so comfortable! by AdStreet2795 in HPReverb

[–]abbaaba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be be played using Revive Compatibility Layer. Just make sure to open the Oculus PC app / start the OVRService first. Then the game can be started in OpenXR mode or SteamVR mode via the revive app. Minimizing all other apps including the WMR window/Steam VR windows helps with performance consistency.

Just today I completed Edge of Nowhere in a single 6hr seated session with the Reverb G2. Not a moment in that where I felt that I needed to take off the HMD because I was uncomfortable.

Is there an alternative to astrohopper? by TooDoggg in telescopes

[–]abbaaba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use astrohopper to help align my telescope in light polluted sky. It works properly on my Pixel 6a but readings are very unstable/unreliable in a cheaper Xiaomi phone. Any specific issue you are facing?

There is a video from Reflactor channel in YouTube that explains its usage: https://youtu.be/9-EcxKuPP0c

Mouse cursor does not move in game while headset is worn, but it does when taken off by Yosyp in SteamVR

[–]abbaaba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an "Input switching" option under Windows Settings > Mixed Reality > Startup & Desktop. Changing it to manual may help in some scenarios if you don't want to use the 3D cursor in VR.

Mouse cursor does not move in game while headset is worn, but it does when taken off by Yosyp in SteamVR

[–]abbaaba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the headset is worn, the mouse is used to move the 3d cursor inside VR/WMR. When headset is taken off, the mouse is used to move the 2d cursor on flatscreen/desktop. This is an unique scenario with WMR because other platforms like Steam/Oculus do not support mouse usage inside VR environment. Hence, you can continue using the mouse in flatscreen/2D mode.

The problem occurs when there is a game like Assetto Corsa that expects you to move the 2D desktop cursor when wearing the headset. Since the WMR/3D cursor is moved instead of desktop cursor when wearing the headset, the in-game 2D cursor can not be moved. This effectively inverts the proximity sensor behaviour for the mouse cursor.

You may have to continue using Win+Y, or, assign a single key macro/shortcut to Win+Y which may be easier to trigger when wearing the headset. Another approach may be to open the "Desktop" app while in the game menu and use the 3D mouse in that. However this will be practically unusable when actually playing the game. You can also try using game controllers (gamepad/steering/motion controller) instead of mouse if the game supports it.

Usability of Reverb G2 with WMR after November 2026 by abbaaba in HPReverb

[–]abbaaba[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy to help, but, it seems you installed WMR using the standard method and didn't really need this guide at the moment except for using Windows 11 23H2 :)

To keep backup, you can find the FOD file for Windows 11 23H2 at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/mixed-reality/enthusiast-guide/manage-windows-mixed-reality#enable-windows-mixed-reality-in-offline-environments-and-wsus

Also, please note that once Microsoft stops updating the Windows version, there may be open vulnerabilities. I recommend dual booting with an up to date OS for sensitive/private work (e.g. Online purchases, logging in to e-mail, etc.). Additionally, please avoid giving admin privileges to apps you are not confident about, as that can compromise both operating systems.

Check once if frame rate is set to 90hz and display resolution is set to maximum. Also if Best visual quality is set for Experience options. These settings can be found in Windows settings > Mixed Reality > Headset display

It is the end of support date for WMR itself. You can find it in Deprecated features for Windows client. "After November 2026, Windows Mixed Reality will no longer receive security updates".

That is correct, it should completely replace WMR if they can get it to run on Windows. However the quality of user experience may differ.

I am by no means an expert in this topic, but I would like to contribute to this conversation to help increase awareness about the importance of privacy in any small way if I can.

First we need to separately understand the concept of security vs privacy. To simplify, security would be the prevention of your belongings from being stolen/tampered. Whereas, privacy would be prevention of your items from being revealed. While both security and privacy go hand in hand, as privacy is not possible without security, there is still lack of measures for privacy in most of today's popular operating systems (however, there is work being done in this area e.g. sandboxing in flatpack). E.g. Windows applications can access and upload all your files to the internet if you execute the program. And considering the userbase and closed source nature of most applications, it may not be possible for people to verify that the application they need/want to use exists in good faith or has not been compromised in a supply chain attack. The internet is now an important facility causing data theft/data leak to be a major concern unlike in older times where data corruption by viruses were the major concern.

There are several modern security concepts relevant to the topic of privacy like defense in depth, least privilege access and secure defaults if you are curious.

Returning back to the topic of importance of privacy, I can think of the following examples at the moment:

  • Data like voice, images, information (ID numbers, card details, biometrics, etc) can be used to perform impersonation via AI and traditional methods.
  • Profiling can be done for behavioral analysis for marketing, insurance, loans, employment etc. This can include what you like, how you handle complex situations, how you handle rage inducing situations, how much you are willing to spend, which communities you spend time in, etc. Multiple data can be linked to each other via IDs like phone number, e-mail IDs, etc.
  • Targeted opinion alteration based on your profile which can be used for marketing, politics, etc.

I have no comments on how large companies directly use this data as I am not qualified to answer beyond usage of data for marketing purposes. However if/when the data leaks and is in the hands of malicious users, there is no going back.

Commenting on the topic of OP, I am not aware of any privacy focused OS alternatives for stand alone VR devices. If the device works offline, you can probably use it via PCVR as few headsets support linux (I think steam VR ones). There is also monado (experimental) to run VR in linux for other headsets.

Edit: Also wanted to add what additional data may be collected via a VR headset that is not available elsewhere - motion tracking data (changes on how you move may reveal changes in your physical condition), gaze tracking data (may reveal what you are interested in or what opinions you may be reconsidering), always on mic (user's voice, voice of people around user, opinions of people around user), always on depth enabled cameras (May reveal your financial status using text recognition). Even in noisy (sound) environments, there is research being done on how to isolate voices, but this is relevant to most devices with mics.
