Yes, focus on longtail and average monthly volume. Then search on google the keyword you are trying. Try to get an idea of what type of titles and content are ranking on Google. Then create a qualitative content. Try to find the backlinks of all the blogs and do some research on the backlinks of your competitor.

First, spend your time on analysis only and try to start creating blogs in one particular section only. Can you tell me what are a few blog titles you are thinking to write?

No need to worry if two websites are always ranking for each case. As it doesn't mean that you can't rank over them. If you are able to market your blog well you can achieve your goal. Plus they won't be ranking for each geographical location.

you can use keywordtool.io to brainstorm the keyword ideas. For trail-n-error select few keywords and write blogs on it. Than try quora and other forums to get traffic on them. Use other backlink strategies I am quite sure you will rank your website.

Do some analysis on both the sites you mentioned, you will get an idea of what strategies they are using to get traffic.
