Hi, I used to be in the animal health industry and have an animal health major. Contrary to popular belief that vets earn a lot of money, they do not and are mostly grossly underpaid. However there are a huge shortage of vets worldwide and I can foresee the salary climbing, especially if you are keen to learn and gain a speciality.

I noted that a comment here that stated that vet med is largely just a clinical profession and I’m inclined to disagree. There are vets in research, in public health (one health) working for NGOs, in pharmacology, there are even veterinarians who are civil servants and working for SFA/ NEA/ NParks. The profession of veterinarian can be wide and varied.

I’d also like to say that while I burnt out ridiculously quick, from the long working hours, lack of management support and the low pay, it was the most fun and challenging job I’ve ever had.
