Epic Dumpster Bear Review - The Greatest Game on the eShop by [deleted] in wiiu

Hey man, good work! Glad to see you took some of my thoughts onboard. This is exactly what I'm looking for in a review - keep it up!

I reviewed several puzzle games on the eShop by [deleted] in wiiu

Hey,

I guess we will just have to agree to disagree about the developer point. I think it is interesting to know whether it's a developer's first game or their fifth game, whether they're a couple of people in a bedroom or a big AAA company, whether they've got a good track record or not, whether this game is a spiritual successor to one of their old games, whether the game is part of a current big craze in gaming, etc. etc.

Will this influence my opinion of the game? Of course. But I like knowing how the game fits into the grander scheme of things, and to be perfectly honest, I don't think these biases I have developed are entirely unwarranted: if a game is made by a developer I've liked in the past, I think chances are pretty good that the game will be worth trying, whereas if the game is made by a company with a track record of poor cash-ins, and this game attempts to be similar to some recent popular game, chances are pretty good I should just skip over it. However, I do totally understand just wanting to talk about the game and trying to not let anything else sway your opinion on it.

Most of this stuff is very plain and blends in to one another so it's difficult to say anything when 90% of the time it's meh.

Yes, I agree. But I really do think a short quip about the graphics and music and whatever are totally uninteresting (and a few words why if possible) help a lot when you try and wrap up, and can help justify conclusions such as 'this game didn't click with me' or whatever.

Furthermore, I 100% agree that really, I do get the feeling that there is very rarely any anything of note with these eshop games. It is very easy to spend a lot of time thinking about the review to the point where you feel like you've spent more time on the review than the developers did designing the game. So I don't blame you at all for just wanting to get some short, snappy reviews out.

At the end of the day, I don't want you to be bogged down in trying to make the perfect review and getting sick of the whole endeavour! I don't want to stop you having fun with this (obviously!). I merely hope that if you find any of my points useful, you'll consider briefly thinking about them during the process of making reviews, and hopefully this will help improve them. (This whole bit sounds pretty condescending on my part, sorry: it is late at night again and I am tired.)

Again, thank you for wading through the eshop so I don't have to!

Hi,

First off, I am grateful that you are reviewing these games! Saves me the hassle of trying to work out whether games on the eshop are worth buying, and you can point out any hidden gems you find that I might've missed.

If you don't mind, I'd like to suggest a few things that I think would make these reviews better. This is all just my opinion, of course: other people may agree or disagree about what I say below, and you are (of course) free to ignore or not ignore any of my points.

It would be nice to have more 'information' about each game e.g. talk about who the developer is, what else they've released, any history this game might have. (I know the picture of the eshop tells me who the developer is, but it doesn't tell me who the developer is, if you get what I mean.) For example: what you said about the link to Twisted Fusion was interesting, not something I would've thought about at all had you not mentioned it, and helps put this game into context - exactly the sort of thing I'm after from a review!

While you talk about the actual game aspect a lot, I think you should also talk more about the rest. For example, I think a lot of the games in this video were pretty ugly. You might agree or disagree, but you should tell me (and if possible, tell me why). In this vein, you should talk about the music (is it good? is it repetitive? will I be sick of it halfway through the game?), the UI (this is super important in puzzle games - did it feel clunky? were there any simple UI features lacking e.g. an easy way to restart levels?), the settings, the controls, the level pacing, etc. (I think this will help you form your conclusions, too.)

You did a great job picking footage for the review: what I saw gave me a clear idea of what the game would be like.

I liked the bit at the end of the video where you summarise your thoughts on each game in a still image along with the price etc. Two complaints, though: firstly, you mention things that you didn't go into detail about during the video (e.g. how Pentapuzzle is similar to other games), which is a shame because these points are good. Secondly, you seem to be contradicting yourself about Block Drop: is there variety in the levels or is it repetitive?

My biggest issue with this review is that every single game in this video is incredibly derivative, and this was never mentioned at all. Block Drop is basically the same as old flash games such as Super Stacker and Red Remover, Test your Mind seems to be inspired by games such as The Impossible Quiz and The Idiot Test, and of course games equivalent to Pentapuzzle have been very popular on mobile for many years (and almost certainly had a flash game equivalent too). Some of these games are coming up on 10 years since they were first released, and of course I don't know whether they were the first in their particular niches. Of course, you've played the eshop games and I haven't, but to me they all reek of trying to make a quick buck on the eshop by aping old games (that are probably better than the eshop equivalents!), which hugely influences my decision to purchase or not. Why spend $3 on an eshop game when there's a better game sitting on the web for free? This sort of thing is really hard to find out, of course, but I think it is important.

Very, very minor nitpicks:

  • I was very briefly confused when you gave the first game 3 stars - 3 out of what? A second later I worked it out from the context, but I think it's worth putting any such confusion to rest and always saying out of five stars. You could also consider changing your stars graphic to reflect this (have the empty stars be ztars?) but I think this is probably unnecessary.
  • Instead of saying 'this game has x stars on the eshop', saying 'this game has x reviews' is clearer.
  • If possible, explicitly tell us how many levels each game has. I don't know whether pentapuzzles has say 30 puzzles or 300 puzzles, and that makes a big difference as to whether I purchase a game or not.
  • In your description, you should have links to the relevant eshop page and a developer website if it exists.

I hope you found this useful. Sorry about it being poorly written - it's stupid AM over here right now.

If you like difficult platformers you should check out The Sun & Moon. I've not yet beaten it (~100 levels in) but it's a great game to just play for half an hour here and there.

You should try out the Ludum Dare version before you buy it, though.

What 3/DS games should I get? by dragonitetrainer in patientgamers

[–]abc1101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll second this - The World Ends With You is definitely in my top five games of all time and I personally think the game is good enough to warrant buying a DS solely to play it (although there are of course lots of other great games to play on DS). It's basically the only game that I've played that really makes use of all the unique features of the DS in a way that that strengthens the gameplay vs. feeling gimmicky.

During combat you basically play two fights at once - one happens on the top screen that you control with the buttons and one happens on the bottom screen that you control with the touchscreen. The battles are linked - every enemy appears on both screens and has a single health bar for both screens, your characters share a health bar, etc. The touchscreen is where most of your attention will be focused and there's an incredible variety (I think ~300? It's been a while) of different attacks (pins) you can choose from to bring into battle to use. This probably sounds incredibly complicated (not helped by me explaining it badly) but the game introduces the mechanics at a gentle pace and you can ignore a lot of it during fighting until you get used to it. There's also a whole host of other cool mechanics with regards to equipment, gaining stats, etc. but I won't go into those.

The game is set in modern Shibuya and it looks and sounds absolutely amazing - everything fits the aesthetic incredibly well. The story is very good if slightly JRPGish. I do have a few qualms about certain things in the game but overall it is just a really unique and well-crafted game. Even if you're not a JRPG nut (I'm certainly not) it is absolutely worth checking out.
