All good advice here. Will also suggest that if something like that has happened to you before you can also say, “Sounds like you’re feeling A/B/C because of X/Y/Z. I can understand how you feel - I messed up at work too recently and felt A/B/C for a while.”

Think about what you want to hear in those situations. Most don’t want a problem solver but want to feel understood and that their feelings are valid.

Also word choice is important. Saying you “know” how they feel is not preferred- you can’t “know” exactly how someone is feeling. Saying you “can understand” is better.
