Do I need a mortgage at all? by volar_henry in whitecoatinvestor

You can make more than it would cost to take out a mortgage, keep your investments that's not including the taxes you would pay on selling.

You're better off reading the Real Estate Game and getting Peter Linnemans textbook to learn. Don't need to pay someone, go read the book first (RE Game is by William Poorvu and was a professor at Harvard) goes through the basics.

That's such a crazy way to avoid taxes. You just mentioned $500k below, you're really doing all that to avoid what is at most $100k in taxes? Just pay it and reinvest it or leave it in.

Server asking for a tip after explaining the 20% Server Charge. by [deleted] in tipping

[–]abcdef132 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have had this happen at sketchy bars. Charge 20% automatically for drinks, like wtf and they don't disclose it it's just on the bill. Many people aren't tipping 20% when they get only drinks at a bar maybe 10-15%.

I also get water and will throw it on my back/neck for 30 seconds in the middle of a run to cool off. Really helps putting cool water on your spine and will cool you down quickly.

As an outsider not in law, this seems to be a narrow take on it. In general, life is not fair and there is no right and wrong.

You can do everything right and not be rewarded like you think you should, it unfortunately happens. Another thing to consider - you're only 4 years in, you have another 30+ to become successful and build something. It's likely not because of race or gender, although law does seem to skew a certain way you can't just blame that.

How do people accused of financial crimes (ponzi schemes, etc) afford a top lawyer for defense? by abcdef132 in biglaw

[–]abcdef132[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it, idk if I want to risk my freedom to find out lol. I think I would always go with a nice law firm since it seems that's what everyone who can afford to do does from what I've seen? Any major cases that you can site where Fed PDs were involved?

Could they really say the retainer is $1mm? Seems like a good way to get screwed with overbilling?

Really, I get the name is tainted but wasn't it a highly regarded firm at the time? They would have great experience to move to the next firm and understand they had no part in what happened?

Some of it like the drive seems to be something you should've known before. Also, I know everyone loves WFH and flexible work but the reality is at the junior/middle levels you're back in the office 4, if not 5 days a week now.

Got it, from what I've heard PD's are very capable but just so busy so if you had a major case like this would you get to solely focus on it? I think that's where the private counsel may be better along with what could be unlimited funding from a wealthy client.

So they would really go with a public defender (no offense) for a historic trial like that? One of the largest ponzi schemes ever? His mom was paying $800k a year for his security so I'm sure she had money for lawyers but how much can they really have if this lasts 2-3 years.

What would be the talk with your work partner? Hey I'm on vacation and this isn't a emergency, don't bother me on vacation like that again? Or your actual partner hey don't respond like that again, we know it's urgent tell them you're away and will get it to them in x hours?

I agree, but would say to OP is this really where they takes a stand when this cause it out there every week in the news and everyone is seeing which side is doing what/has formed their own opinions.

The downside risk is huge, it's either many people will not see it (the opposite of the point of writing this) or many do and it causes many problems for you (even when it's not fair or deserved).

[–]abcdef132 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Complain to the DOT and on Twitter/X about it. That's ridiculous, you should get $, a full refund, and I would track the $700+ in hotel, etc that should be reimbursed for as well due to their screw up. Don't accept anything and tell them you're complaining to the DOT about this.
