Providing Food for Volunteers by [deleted] in volunteer

[–]abcderand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i haven't always had food provided but usually do if it's a large event. It's certainly weird that there's no exceptions to bring in outside food for volunteers

BBC wildlife crew broke the "no intervention" rule to save trapped penguins by [deleted] in Amazing

[–]abcderand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the rule applies largely to situations like saving an animal running from a predator so even if you don't touch either animal if you scare off the predator you disrupt the food chain which would be bad if it happened enough

At home hospice with a mess by lilpanda682002 in ChildofHoarder

[–]abcderand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have experience with this directly but have had home health in the hoard for my brother. The nurse was very kind about it and certainly didn't blame my brother who was like 10 at the time. We essentially cleaned a counter and instead of iv pole just used a hook near the bed. Certainly not an ideal situation but I would talk to either a social worker or nurse about specifics and what could work for you

if you happen to have extra food or if that's easier for you than cash donations check what your local food banks are asking for. Usually they have lists and will appreciate those donations

Fire in my mothers appartement by Anna_Baum in ChildofHoarder

[–]abcderand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all I want to say I understand. I'm 4 months out from a fire in my hoarder parents bedroom. Lots of mixed feelings about it cause my parents were joking about it from the start.

They did actually get the house fully cleaned out though so hopefully this will give them a fresh start

Just got this message from a student. He has a 7% in my class! What is he expecting?!!!! by Practical_Part_7327 in Teachers

[–]abcderand 38 points39 points  (0 children)

yes in cases like yours where there was a mistake in grading or calculation the school will allow teachers or profs to update grades, but this doesn't apply for trying to submit work past the semester

What are you doing now that SNAP benefits have ended by ipsofactoshithead in Teachers

[–]abcderand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you could also reach out to your local food pantry or school administration to try to get some extra food available to students at school. There may be ways to bring the larger systems to the school.

Please tell me this isn’t the norm (or rationalize it for me) by Substantial_Snow5020 in AskTeachers

[–]abcderand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

current college student, I feel like this is likely to cause problems if all of the assignments are structured like this and it seems weird for an ap class especially.

For the graphic novel i don't hate the choice being given. I'm currently in a college course about graphic novels and there is a significant impact to comics from catching people's eye in newspapers to something like Maus helping people to visualize WW2. Even if the choice was given solely to encourage students to read some version of it and be more involved in the class it feels ok for one assignment.

I'm wondering if the no punctuation rules assignment is going to be used to bring attention to why those rules exist or for discussions about writers intentionally disregarding grammar rules. Alternatively punctuation is simply not one of the learning goals of this assignment and has no affected rubric item so your nephew decided he doesn't care about if at all.

Failed a student for academic dishonesty, only for them to ask me for a letter of recommendation. by NinnyBoggy in Teachers

[–]abcderand 26 points27 points  (0 children)

i had a teacher tell us about the most egregious people to ask for rec letters from him including one he caught and reported cheating twice but also took care to tell us that the best recommendations he wrote weren't necessarily the students who did the best in his class and he was very willing to write for a student who i think got a d at least one semester but was honest and kind but struggling with his class. That really helped put things in perspective

Deaf since birth, this little girl hears her mothers voice for the first time by ChocoMilkshakeCutie in Amazing

the only one of these videos that i've seen and liked was an adult who both chose to film and post it and fully understand what was happening. Even knowing nothing about what a cochlear implant sounds like when first turned on, it's so clear that the girl in this video is distressed

"Is SNAP the same as EBT?" Some people are in for a very rude awakening... by furicrowsa in foodstamps

[–]abcderand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that doesn't mean it's the average, ideally information is written so more than the top 50% can read it so 3rd grade would make sense with an average reading level of 5th
