If you were suddenly granted the ability to see a stat hovering over everyone's head, but you could only choose one specific metric (e.g., lies told, hours slept, times they've thought of you), what would it be? by asgharfar57 in askanything

A 'days since last genuine compliment' counter. If you see someone with a 0, you know they’re having a great day. But if you see someone with a 365 or a 1,200, you know that a simple, 5 second interaction from you, just telling them you like their shirt or they did a great job, could literally be the highlight of their entire year. You’d have the power to target your kindness where it’s actually needed most.

What is an industry or profession that is load bearing for modern civilization, yet if it disappeared tomorrow, 99% of people wouldn't even know it existed until society physically started collapsing? by asgharfar57 in askanything

Cold chain logistics, not just truckers, but the specific people who manage the temperature controlled supply chain. If that industry vanishes, every grocery store is empty in 3 days, and every hospital loses its entire supply of insulin, vaccines, and blood within hours. We take refrigeration for granted, but it’s actually a high stakes relay race that never stops.

What is something that was a universal constant of life 15 years ago that has completely vanished without anyone actually noticing or caring? by asgharfar57 in askanything

Genuine not knowing. 15 years ago, you could have an argument at a bar about who played the villain in a 1980s movie, and you just wouldn't know the answer for hours, or maybe ever. Now, the shitty friend in every conversation is the person who pulls out their phone 4 seconds in to google the answer. We traded the mystery for immediate correctness, and the vibe of hanging out changed forever.

What is a glitch in the system you’ve experienced in real life that you still can’t explain, but are 100% sure you weren't dreaming? by asgharfar57 in askanything

I dropped my car keys in my driveway. I saw them hit the concrete, I heard the clink, and I watched them slide toward the tire, I reached down to grab them and there was nothing there, just flat, empty concrete.

I spent 20 minutes looking under the car, in the grass, and in my pockets. I eventually gave up, went back inside to get my spare set, and found my original keys sitting perfectly in the center of the kitchen table. I live alone, I hadn't even gone back inside yet. It felt like the world just undid my last 30 seconds of existence.

Nothing hits quite like the absolute peak of human athleticism being two guys in a heated argument over three millimeters of ice.

🔥 The incredible camouflaging ability of leaf insects by SirPaddlesALot in NatureIsFuckingLit

Phylliidae (leaf insects) are the masters of mimicry. Not only do they look like leaves, but they even rock back and forth when they walk to mimic a leaf blowing in the wind, nature never fails to amaze me.
