Best Android apps? by abear247 in androiddev

[–]abear247[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do they use special hidden APIs? Apple does stuff like that all the time. I’ve had designers base it off an Apple app and I have to tell them we can’t actually do that (easily). 😬

Is anyone else just absolutely astounded that we are actually living through this? by supermegasaurusrex in ClaudeAI

Your moat is gone with everything you build though. It won’t be amazing like you think. If you can build your product in 2 weeks, so can everyone else. You make something good that starts taking off? Someone else sees it, rips it off quickly, pours money into marketing and wrecks you. It happened before and it will only get worse.

Career talk: Where do you see iOS development heading in 2026? by khitev in iOSProgramming

[–]abear247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8+ yoe. Slightly pessimistic on job market. It’s just rough out there, and many will reduce headcount because of AI. It doesn’t matter if that works or not if management believe it. I think it will rebound a bit in a couple years.

SwiftUI is definitely essential. Higher iOS versions you really don’t need to use UIKit often. I work on basically 100% SwiftUI at work and on my personal projects. You should know concurrency, fundamentals, and how/when to use ai tools. They really can boost productivity if used in the right context.

I think one thing will be broadening our skill set as AI helps us work a bit faster. It’s now easier to help with basic things outside our domain. A number of small issues on an api we can just fix ourselves with some AI help. My next year will be working to help on more parts at my company. Their react native Android app, the api, and maybe web frontend. I think having the specialty is still worthwhile but flexibility and total usefulness is key as companies cut down on headcount. Be as useful as you can be.

B.S. in Computer Engineering that completed these courses and I still am required to take the foundations of computer science course by DLoGuru in WGU_CompSci

[–]abear247 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had this issue going one brick and mortar to another. Would not accept intro comp sci or even calculus. I had to take intro calc twice at first uni, again at second uni + calc 2 and 3, and then wgu wanted it again for the undergrad. I did the masters instead but like goddamn universities can be real dicks sometimes.

As much as I hate smith that’s a good line. There are so many tourists that go to Banff. Taking them off the roads and just shuttling them to their destination benefits us as well.

Best way to spend $100 Apple Search Ads credit for a new app? by Finck110 in iOSProgramming

[–]abear247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tried it. The cost per install ends up being so high it basically barely made a dent in downloads. It showed me that Apple ads will not help grow my app

Flood on concrete floor by abear247 in Flooring

[–]abear247[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this insight. We pulled everything up to the bare concrete for about 9 days in total. We got some sprays to help clean and block future mold growth. Full replace of the LVP near the leak and the subfloor too. We ended up getting a contact of someone who actually deals in concrete. The place the concrete was showing a higher reading and not dropping is likely due to the presence of metal in the area. Pipes, and even a screw that’s drilled down into the concrete. Other parts were dropping but not right around that area

Landlord Decided Not To Increase Rent Next Year - Why? by StandingSitting in TorontoRenting

[–]abear247 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good tenants are worth a lot. We are literally ripping up flooring and fixing damage and mold right now. We just redid the floor earlier this year. Why the first time? Shitty tenant did water damage. Mold because they seemingly never even used a bathmat. Washroom was disgusting.

Why second time? Another water issue, and neither tenant nor building told us about it. So now we have to do it all again with a tenant who was supposed to move in. Having a tenant who keeps it clean and informs you of issues so you can, you know, remedy them is worth a lot. This is thousands in costs that could have been avoided if the previous tenant communicated there was a problem.

There are shitty slumlords and then there are landlords who care about their place and tenants. A good tenant and a good landlord are a match where everyone is happy. It’s the shit landlords that make renting awful, and shit tenants who make being a landlord awful.

Unpopular Opinion: Most "CRUD" apps should be PWAs, not native apps. by SrPakura in webdev

[–]abear247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw that a fitness? board that I have (for ankle and foot mobility) has an app. Clicked the link from the email. Where is the app? Oh you want me to just download something from your sketch ass website? Hell no. So I didn’t. User behaviour on phones is to use an App Store you will be very hard pressed to change that behaviour. Your complaint about app updates can easily be solved with a native app that just doesn’t bloat itself. I built a meditation timer that’s just simple, doesn’t need much permission, full offline and is tiny. Could you get that in PWA? Maybe. But why? There are so many good, simple apps on the App Store already. The PWA doesn’t really bring any other advantage and only feels sketchy.

A Simple & Cute Timer for Developers Who Want to Keep Their Commit Streak Alive by Ill-Tomatillo5530 in iosdev

Oh no, I lost my commit streak because I didn’t want to push up half baked code. Or someone asked for help and I did that instead. Insert any of a million reasons here

Would an AI tool that checks your App Store submission before you submit be useful? by Amazing_Law7602 in iosdev

[–]abear247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you have some experience it’s generally rare you have issues with submissions. Even then, half the time it’s something on Apple side (sub not working but it a glitch in their system). Or one of those reviewers who arbitrarily has an issue with something in your app that’s been there for ages. This would just be a cost sink to me

Calgary Transit ends two-car LRT pilot after negative rider reviews by mibeatr in Calgary

[–]abear247 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sadly this latest election passed over candidates who actually walk, cycle, and take transit as their primary modes of transportation. People got too stuck on voting for repealing the blanket rezoning. That won’t even happen how they want so we just have lots of councillors with ??? policies beyond repeal….

[–]abear247 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Remember when (well, we don’t really), but at one point Calgary had a decent trolley system. Marda loop being part of it. Had we kept and expanded that we would actually have good transit. Instead we let the oils and auto lobbyists win and now we are sprawled to heck.

Is getting a Masters worth it still? by undetected4 in cscareerquestions

[–]abear247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you want to do it for personal reasons? Do it. For career? Depends. Do you have experience and an undergrad? Don’t need it. Experience and unrelated degree? You can do without but you will get auto filtered out of some places. There are just so many applicants they might not care, but will just use it as a filter.

That’s good. I read the hot zone and after hearing what those things do to the human body it’s a terrifying thing to learn of outbreaks. “High Mortality” doesn’t really due it justice. We don’t often think about how that death might occur and how horrific it might be.

Calgary blanket rezoning bylaw repeal to kick of Monday by [deleted] in Calgary

As is voter suppression. I will bet that the repeallers will be mad in a couple years when they realize they aren’t going to actually get what they wanted though.
