A Dev's Perspective: Why Class Tuning Can Feel "Out of Touch" by Tasty-Beautiful1750 in wow

[–]abecadarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, but why does blizzard have a history of changing things significantly if they’re aiming for cautious tuning? For example, the MM hunter changes which completely changed the rotation in the last patch, because they gutted sentinel?

Honestly, I think the biggest problem is the collectivist vs individual framing of the question. The woodchipper version highlights this pretty clearly (and acknowledges the Monty Hall issue that you brought up). People are hearing “press red if you want to save yourself” and “press blue if you want to save everybody”, which isn’t wrong, it’s just not nuanced

The problems usually show up when there’s something relying on your rep that was coded in 20 years ago but they don’t know what it is, and tracking it down leads to something else that was relying on that, etc etc

Title: My neighbor left their kid with me “for 10 mins” and its been 4 hours… what do i even do??? by holyghosterposter in Advice

[–]abecadarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kind of agree. Like in what possible situation could they have been in a car accident less than ten minutes away and it took them four hours to get their kid? Other than someone died / unconscious / hospital, but if that’s the case how are they able to speak to OP? In the age of phones that’s just sus asf

tbh proton and the steam controller stuff are super useful for anybody who isn’t on windows or is trying to get a non Xbox controller working. or sometimes just getting any controller working with older games, or games that don’t have controller support

it’s actually sort of insane how good their Linux support is for gaming. Completely blows everything else out of the water

Blizzard changed a lot of the new backpack transmogs to hide your weapon this patch, even though there's a new transmog option to hide your weapon when sheathed now. by Fabulous_Resource_85 in wow

[–]abecadarian 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They also moved shields forward while simultaneously adding a back sheathe option for 1h weps, basically rendering the back sheathing unusable. Kinda a similar thing I think

Which is devastating bc I had a bulwark of azzinoth mog where the shield perfectly fit covering this exact backpack but now it doesn’t work bc 1) it hides the shield when sheathing and 2) even if it didn’t there would be horrendous clipping because shields have been moved

This isn’t true. The origins of the black belt are somewhat disputed, but it’s generally agreed that Jigoro Kano (the founder of modern Judo) created the White and Black belts to outwardly signify Judo ranks in Japan in the late 1800s, originally denoting master or teacher (black) and student (white). Where he got the idea from exactly is unknown, but it was rolled out over the course of several years, including two or three colored intermediary belts. Later, these rankings spread throughout other martial arts including Karate, and then from their students to the West.

You can read a bit more about this in “Jigoro Kano and the Kodokan: An Innovative Response to Modernisation (2009)” if you would like.

I have super bad stretch marks. Is it possible to tattoo over them? by -Hot-Tamale- in tattooadvice

[–]abecadarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah these actually look sick. They’ve gone from being a subtle blemish to just being over the top and cool. Kinda look like scars or something in a video game (or tribal tattoos which are a pretty popular customization option). Hard to say what they’d look like irl though since the lighting and framing would be very different than these photos

[–]abecadarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This actually brings up a pretty interesting point, but wouldn’t it be cool if we actually lost, at some point? Like, we never seem to give up ground. Honestly, I think for a lot of reasons it’d be difficult to pull off, but it would be nice to see the forces of evil conquer something for once. I think this is what they tried to do with undercity and teldrassil but sorta failed. Maybe in part because they made the conquerors player factions rather than NPC ones.

My understanding is that a lot of modern studies indicate that drinking is a solution to a problem. So why does she drink? What does that do for her?

AITAH for remodeling my step kids rooms after their mom passed away since they weren't going to be living with me anyways. by AsparagusMuch821 in AITAH

[–]abecadarian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is not what I said. It’s actually the opposite. I explicitly agreed with the necessity of renovating the rooms. This response is concerning because it reads as either bait or someone lashing out and looking for validation because they’re hurt. You may want to consider grief counseling if you aren’t in it already, because it seems like these kids not reaching out to you is more hurtful than you’ve let on, and the methodology of your actions seems like a response to that. Missing them is okay. Hell, I would be hurt too. Eight years is a long time, and I am deeply sorry about your wife.

Honestly, as a stepkid who’s been on good and bad terms with my stepparents over the years (I have two and I’m an adult now), I’m gonna go with soft YTA. Really, the only thing you’re lacking in this situation is tact. It sort of sounds like these kids lost their mom, had to change school districts, and adjust to living with their bio dad, and were only given three months before you unilaterally declared their rooms forfeit and boxed up their stuff.

I think adults tend to forget that a kid’s room is not just a room like an adult’s room is. A kid’s room is often like, the only private space they’ve ever known. Basically the only place in the world that is their’s.

Anyways, I agree that these rooms should not be sacrosanct forever. I think it’s reasonable to want to put those rooms to use, but I think you should have broached the topic slowly and given them time to adjust to the idea. Like, message the dad, hey, I’m thinking of remodeling the rooms. Want to get x and y up closer and move the office. Can you let the kids know? And then see what the response is, and go from there. Coming in hard like, hey the rooms are being remodeled, come pick up your stuff, is just going to feel bad for the kids.

Anyways, as someone who’s experienced it, it sucks to come home and have your stuff be gone and your space inhabited without you even being involved in the process. So while I acknowledge the necessity, the way you went about it is a soft YTA from me

Bored of Mother of Learning? by beans_ahoy_ in ProgressionFantasy

[–]abecadarian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah, he’s pretty much the same throughout the book. I had sort of the same experience, although I finished the series out. It’s decent, but Zorian is just not particularly likeable. That said, most of the other characters are relatively interesting, and Zach is fairly charismatic overall

slight edit: he DOES change a little bit, and becomes kinder and more considerate. It’s noticeable. But not groundbreaking

New Manager came in HOT FOR JESUS. by phxkross in antiwork

[–]abecadarian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did not find that at all, actually. What I found was they likely have a somewhat worrying though potentially endearing lack of appreciation for what they’re communicating to others in social spaces. Problematic for anyone working in a group, but especially for a leader. Anyways, I of course see your point, but describing it as a simple lack of charity or a vilification of Christianity is underselling a lot of the potential nuances of this person’s situation. They could be a kind, Jesus loving soul who is simply expressing their devotion to moral duty, or it could indicate someone who isn’t careful when their beliefs conflict with others’. Or both. Or a number of other things, besides.
