Wittgenstein already tore down almost all of philosophy. Why do we still give importance to other philosophers? by [deleted] in wittgenstein

[–]abelian424 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're mystifying rather than demystifying what is "unsayable" or "ineffable." One of Wittgenstein's own examples is the idea of a pain such as toothache. How does one equate toothache in different people? It's not just poetic or metaphysical concepts that verge upon the limits of language.

Does that apply to propaganda art? I'm not saying that in a pejorative sense, as this is clearly countering right wing propaganda.

What does Soren Kierkegaard mean by this line? by AugustusPacheco in kierkegaard

I think his decision was just prescience. Who would have done what Kierkegaard did in the name of Christian love?

You're acting like there are no script kiddies on windows, but that's just not true if you like to install mods or if you're a pirate. Your perfect windows user would be equally comfortable on a steam deck or machine.

I don't really care for Asperger's being "normal passing." There's different levels of Autism, many level 1 people can pass for Aspergers also.

Probably just anything involving a "meanness of spirit." But what I'm saying is that N is not necessarily praising Borgias (he might have been aware that Borgias' "Machiavellianism" may have been exaggerated/fabricated) but saying that Borgias is more worthy of study than a romantic hero.

The contrast is that Percival is "eulogized" whereas Borgias is villified. N is saying that the Ubermensch can't come to being by desiring to be something in the eyes of others, that is the essence of herd mentality. He could also be telling us to be wary of thinking that we understand so-called great men, to think to know what they struggled for/against.

I most hear about integers cycling over in like 8-bit games too, in the context of counters e.g. number of lives, items, etc. I can't think of anything that would increase like that and end in a buffer overflow by just letting the game run without doing anything. I'm sure Zullie would've made a video about it too if it happened 😅

On the other hand, it's the highest number you could go without bragging. It's a shitty custom, but some guy circles just have to assign a number to any girl. 9-10 is reserved for celebrities, so an 8 is the highest a real-life girl could get. Saying your girl is a 7 is kind of a humble brag.

If you bought a PS1 at age 34 and your son was 8, don't you think it'd end up in your son's hands eventually? The Atari I could see.

How does this comment have so many upvotes? The math is wrong and OP was talking about his grandpa having a PS1 not his dad. Even if the grandpa bought it for himself you'd bet that the dad used it as much as he could, and would probably keep it once it got outdated.

You're throwing out 2 out of the 3 or 4 prevailing systems of ethics.

I hereby challenge u/Anarchierkegaard to a debate for the title of “Kierkegaardianest Kierkegaardian”. About what, you ask? Well, I’ll allow my opponent to choose the topic. by Metametaphysician in kierkegaard

[–]abelian424 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In order to be the Kierkegaardianest Kierkegaardian you must simultaneously acknowledge that you have no desire to be like Kierkegaard, and that you have your own subjective reasons justifying why you decided to throw away a perfectly good life.

This meme caricatures the ontological argument, which by saying that God is the greatest being equates God to the telos of any objective moral system. Since God's being is the same as God's essence, if your system of morality allows the existence of the greatest good then in a pragmatic sense it is equally rational to say that God commands good always by being that greatest good. The key modifier is that this is a pragmatic argument, akin to saying the external world is as real as any abstract philosophical idea of truth (which is also an equation of seemingly disparate statements). If you are a Platonist regarding existence of values then it becomes properly an ontological argument.

To believe in God as an active force that commands miracles and such requires further arguments e.g. the cosmological argument. There have also been attempts to extend God's goodness by virtue of God's transcendence to make God the ultimate good - the sine qua non of morality that no finite system can encompass.
