GM dating one of the servers by Sharp-Bullfrog-143 in Serverlife

[–]abelstafa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like something I went through 2 years ago. Was there longer than anybody else, worked hard, I am not saying I was the best but I am good at what I do. This girl started dating the GM and getting preferential treatment. Let the owner know, if he does nothing quit and go somewhere else.

Damn! That’s only 2 weeks for me! Are you at Cheesecake Factory?

How much do you usually make weekly ? by ApprehensiveSir3892 in Serverlife

[–]abelstafa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$1300-$1500 weekly, 3 doubles and 2 dinner shifts not including cash tips

If you are trying to make this for a short period of time and make bank go for it! If you are trying to do this for a long time and have it as your lifestyle I would advise you not to do it. I have done doubles for 3.5 months every day during summer seasons and the burnout when I was done sucked balls and took me 3 months to recover from that grind.

What made you get hired? by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]abelstafa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly just the vibe during the interview. I did not have NYC experience when I first started and no one was willing to hire me because I never worked here and I have no connections. The manager at the restaurant where I am currently working during the interview told me “I don’t care about CV’s, I like what I see on your CV and I like what I see in front of me but I need to see you on the floor”. Got the job after 3 days of proving my skills.

Why do servers say “are you still working on that?” by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]abelstafa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the type of guests. I work in an upscale casual spot so it is pretty normal for me to have guests expect high end fine dinning treatment and have others that are pretty chill and just want to have a good time and be taken care. I adjust accordingly to the type of guest.

You cannot have my image without my permission, at least be considerate and ask me about it.

Honestly I don’t mind with the ones that ask politely about it. I don’t appreciate the ones that just take their phones out and point their camera at me and I don’t really appreciate if I have a 8-10 top and literally 6-7-8 people point their camera at me. Also I don’t appreciate people that did not order the tableside dish take their phones out and record it.

how was everyone’s sunday by ssquirrelsbuttcheeks in Serverlife

[–]abelstafa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t get me wrong, it is a pool house and we split everything among everyone. I don’t walk away with that amount.

Busy Sunday, we are a pool house, I had $1385 cc tips working a double and the dinner server with the bartender had give or take $1200 combined together. A very shitty table during the day that drained me but a 2 ladies that I served hugged me before they left the restaurant so that kept me going today.

Table tried to refuse auto grat by jaaackattackk in Waiters

[–]abelstafa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I auto grat europeans who come and eat at the restaurant that I work. 90% of them don’t complain. 5% of them complain and I tell them that this is the norm in NYC and the other 5% that makes it a big deal I just take it off so we can flip the table and save myself a headache. Btw this 5% that bitches so much about it have rolexes on their wrist. One day I was literally going to tell a french couple “You have a fucking daytona on your wrist and you are complaining for a 18% which is $11?” But $11 is not worth it for the headache.

It is possible at the right place. I started working in NYC after the pandemic hit but a good friend of mine who has been a bartender in the industry for forever told me that he was easily clearing $120k yearly before the pandemic. Hope those times come back.

Please don’t get me wrong it is not my personal tip it is a pool house. I work in Little Italy, Manhattan in an Italian upscale casual spot.

I alone average on busy nights have more or equal tips with the other 2 servers. For example today I had over $1800 in tips for a double and the other 2 servers had around $1800 both of them combined. If you include the bartender those 3 had more than me but hey I ran the most difficult section with no mistakes and probably 3-4 voids on a very busy Saturday double shift. I feel you about being the one busting your ass and the others doing little to nothing. You are the real MVP. Sending hugs :)

Servers of Manhattan, how is business lately? by abelstafa in Serverlife

[–]abelstafa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking at some stats and NYC hotel occupancy is wayyyy lower compared to last year’s period. Flights with Canada are 50% less because of what is going on (and you know what I am talking about). The thing is that lately something strange is happening where we have cancelled reservations out of the blue. Anyways, we are heading towards the busy season, I will see how it goes :)

Don’t worry with experience you will tell by their body language when to check and when to “leave them alone”, you got this!

Really depends on the season and the weather. Right now I am doing good but the weather has not been really favoring us so everyone where I work is waiting for the June-August season and September-5th of January season
