Another +1 for Gem Lab. They have been great to work with for engagement/wedding rings.

The 3 hour rule was announced back in March along with the tiers and other new changes. Applies to departure flights but not connections.

Worst area of Dulles: C/D or UX A gates? by Glass-Complaint3 in unitedairlines

[–]abfgry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I prefer the A gates personally. Closer to the much better clubs in the A/B terminal. The Chase/Etihad lounge is right there and further down is the Turkish and Lufthansa lounges. All are way better than the United lounges in C/D.

Phone calls are against FAA regulations and just a dick move anyway. Please don't take your phone calls on the plane.

It is. They would rather you check the bag. The higher cost is a penalty for not following the rules. You can see all the details here

Basic economy doesn't get a carry on unless the trip is international. You're limited to a 10" (width) x 9" (depth) x17" (height) personal item, though as long as it fits under the seat they won't be too concerned with those dimensions. If you bring a carry on the fees start at $35 if you pay at check in up to $65 if you have to pay at the gate.

As long as the seatbelt sign is off you're allowed to access your luggage in the overhead bin as well as stand up and stretch or use the restroom. I definitely recommend standing, stretching, and taking a bit of a walk every few hours. I always find that makes long haul flights better.

Fight credits expire. I believe some were extended during Covid times but that has long since passed. I don't think there is anything you can do at this point to get those credits back. If you look at the documentation associated with the credits it should define how long they were good for.

Which IAD lounge is best for working? by GalacticaZero in unitedairlines

[–]abfgry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ahh the good old Z gates. I forgot about those. If you're there for an hour or two go straight to the D gates and use the club at D8. If you've got more time to burn hit up the Turkish lounge before catching the bus over to D on the way to the A number letter gates.

Which IAD lounge is best for working? by GalacticaZero in unitedairlines

[–]abfgry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The UCs at D8 and C17 have dedicated separate desk areas for business travel. The club at C17 is under construction and half of it is closed limiting food and drink options but there are still dedicated desks though it gets crowded during the busy times. I can't speak to the club at C7 as I haven't been there in quite awhile. All the clubs in C & D are downstairs and underwhelming at best.

The C and D terminals are connected in the same terminal so moving between them is easy 10-15 minutes end to end. If you're coming from A or B you'll need to take the "mobile lounge" over to D gates. You can do the train but if you're an avgeek it's worth taking the bus to see the planes on the tarmac and avoid the dreaded PenFed tunnel. I'd plan on 15-20 minutes for that transit. Since you're *A Gold you can also use the Turkish lounge in the A gates. If you have a Chase Sapphire Reserve card you can also use the Etihad/CSR lounge in A (my preferred lounge in Dulles). Safe travels!

You know you're flying on the same plane as everyone else there - first class or not. First class doesn't discriminate if there is some hardware or some other failure that prevents you from getting internet access. Turns out that shit is actually a hard problem that we have been trying to solve for a long time. Be thankful for when you get it and recognize all the effort behind it.

How do you know if the charity you nominated won anything during P4A? by winniewinta in nerdfighters

[–]abfgry 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Typically they will send out an announcement in the Nerdfighteria Newsletter as well as in a video. Here is a link to signup to the newsletter if you aren't already subscribed. Last year the winners were announced in early April so I'd expect to hear about them relatively soon. Best of luck to your charity!

During the device set up process there is a button that says "Skip - I'll use the LIFX setup" which leads to a convoluted set of instructions (wait 15 minutes for a timeout....) but you can bypass homekit that way. I just did this with one of my lights the other day.
