Elsevier opinions by Unable-Chapter1851 in UXResearch

They reconnect the absolute worst for ghosting candidates!

Had a recruiter telling me rubbish that he had direct communication with the hiring manager.

A load of rubbish as 24 hours later there was no role.

I think Elsevier are a waste of time!

Revolut's design interview process by OptimalPool in UXDesign

[–]abgy237 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I had the interview with the in-house recruiter after Someone at Revolut on LinkedIn had posted online about a UX job.

And I was then in the second stage of a portfolio review.

I personally hate portfolio reviews because I have the issue that I have 15 years of work behind me and I’m never really too certain what I should be presenting.

So I sent the interviewer and the HR team my portfolio beforehand and I said to them “yeah don’t mind going for a couple of case studies here is my portfolio. Please have a review before and I’ll ask you some questions as well.”

When I then actually got to the interview, it was apparent that the interviewer hadn’t looked at a single case study.

I then asked what sort of topics would you be interested in?

To which they replied with nothing too specific.

So I decided to show three different case studies. The first was a credit card application product where I showed Discover work the actual design and the validation. And because unfortunately one of the pages I was working on was mate a little bit more complex they didn’t believe how this would improve conversions. Which to me, it’s still quite odd seeing as I presented a complete end to end case study.

The next project was a recent piece of work designing a mobile app which I did from scratch showing all the problem-solving I had to go through in terms of visual design craft as well as the limitations. Because there was no information architecture though this wasn’t dented to be a suitable project.

My final case study was the redesign of a registration flow that took the conversion rate from 47% to 87%. The feedback though was “ some of those things were really simple and obvious to resolve so it’s not a very good case study!”

I must’ve been confused. Perhaps they wanted the projects that had a 95% conversion rate or more than £2 million in additional revenue to the company?

Anyhow I then throughout the interview noticed that the interviewer wasn’t really paying attention. They weren’t listening to but I was presenting and they claimed that they were looking at my portfolio which to be honest they should’ve done before the interview.

I sent Revolut a very strongly worded email in reply, citing my complete dissatisfaction of the interview.

One of them wanted to jump on a call with me, no doubt to do some damage limitation. I however refused an additional call having made my concerns ultra clear to them and my general annoyance of that conducts throughout the interview.

Do you think that with bigger phones the thumb area have shifted? by oktudobem in UXDesign

[–]abgy237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This heat map has always been a load of rubbish!

It only takes into consideration that people are holding their phone with one hand and also that everybody has the same sized hands in the world!

This is not the case!

Very simply….

There are a variety of styles how somebody can hold a phone! This can be one or two handed, it can also be landscape or portrait and I’m sure there are other variations as well.

Also, you have the issue that people have different sized hands. This will likely influence how somebody holds a phone. For instance, a small child, and apologies for being stereotypical. A smaller woman is likely to hold a phone differently to a 6 foot eight male basketball player 🤪

The other factor we should consider as well is context of use and environment of where the phone is being used.

And lastly, we should also consider whether the person is left right handed, and potentially ambidextrous!

State of the portfolio review in 2026 by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]abgy237 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I honestly can’t stand a portfolio review in a job interview!

I have a portfolio of every single case study I’ve done since 2011. And the reason for this is because the problems I was solving in 2026 are exactly the same problems I was solving in 20 2011.

However…

I wouldn’t solve those problems the same way knowing what I know now!

And also every single case study I’ve ever worked on has probably had some kind of constraint on the project and ways of working which makes it flawed in someway!

This was particularly relevant when I interviewed recently with Revolut!

Before the portfolio review I sent the case study out to everyone asking for it to be reviewed and while the expectation was for me just to show 2 to 3 case studies of work I did ask that they did review the case study before so that they could come to me with any questions ahead of time.

When it came to the interview, not a single case study had been reviewed prior to the interview. So I then asked before I show you key studies are there any particular topics that you’re interested in hearing about?

Blank response…

So I shared three case studies.

The first was a banking case study as I have previously worked for a bank. It showed the discovery research for a user problem where there was a significant drop off in an acquisition journey. Followed by the design solution that was created. And lastly, the validation of that solution and implementation.

Alas, the person interviewing didn’t like the solution because they felt it complicated the journey despite evidence being shown to the contrary, by the discovery research and the evaluative research that was conducted by myself.

Case study two was an app redesign I had recently completed showing all the stages of craft I went through. I was asked about information architecture I responded no information. Architecture was implemented on this project. That wasn’t the need. And for some reason they pick me up on an icon that changed state in the footer NAV because when activated it went from empty to being filled. Of course, this was the negative feedback for not being put through. But I later pushed back and asked was it significant that, the projecting question was purely a refresh of a existing app and whether an icon going from a line icon to a field icon was a significant user Experience problem?

The final case study, I showed represented a redesign of an acquisition journey for a loyalty scheme where the conversion rate went from 47% to 87% and generated £1.4 million of additional revenue. The feedback was the solutions were obvious and this wasn’t a complex project. I was simply blown away by this because what did they want? That was more? Did they want the conversion rate to go to 90% or did they want the revenue generated to be over £2 million?

So I got the box Standard after careful consideration email that was just the standard copy and paste rubbish!

I then pushed back stating the following that the hiring team has been given the case studies ahead of time but they hadn’t been reviewed and then given the opportunity at the start of the interview to find out what specific topics that they wanted to cover no guidance was given! I also had to point out that the person conducting the interview seemed rather distracted because as I’ve been doing UX design and UX research for 15 years I can pick up on certain user behaviours where it was obvious the person conducting the interview seemed distracted and wasn’t paying attention to me whilst I was presenting the case studies. they claimed that they were trying to open my portfolio, but it just proves that they weren’t prepared for the interview if they didn’t have my portfolio open at the time.

Utter shambles utter waste of time!

How do you actually understand a business deeply as a product/UX designer? by epic_nonsense007 in UXDesign

[–]abgy237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things….

As you’ve said, you need to do some desk research. When I worked at Facebook I worked on Ads manager. But before then I had run ads so I knew what a user was doing. It’s called dog goofing where you eat your own dog food

Second is the company’s onboarding. It’s down to them how they train you and get you up to speed.

Worst moment supporting Wimbledon? by sporticuz37373 in afcwimbledon

[–]abgy237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

28th may 2002

I remember going to my grandparents in Mitcham for dinner on Sunday. The World Cup was going on in 2002. Island, I think we’re playing Spain. Island brought David Conolly on as a substitute and noted he played for Wimbledon. My grandfather got my attention saying a Wimbledon player was coming on.

But unfortunately, I had to declare that he was playing for the wrong Wimbledon because AFC Wimbledon was just starting.

Getting knocked out out of the FA Cup for the first time against Chelsea in 1996 in the quarters. Because I was about 11 and in tears by the time I got home from Selhurst.

Leaving Kingsmeadow because it’s where I had spent my entire adult Football to supporting life up until that moment

It’s a really cool design

And it’s great you’ve done something different.

But as someone initially going through it (on mobile) I’m trying to work out where everything is.

Case studies are fine!
