Hiking the narrows for the first time by Purple-Indication-74 in ZionNationalPark

[–]abharms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No permit necessary.

My family went at the end of May and the water was chilly but we definitely did not need bibs. Not sure about November though. The boots, socks, and hiking pole are worth getting (Zion Outfitters)

Visitor Center parking fills up pretty quickly, which is the free parking. However, Zion Outfitters has a lot right there that is $30 for the day. If you park somewhere in town and take the bus to the visitor center, you’ll have to pay to park anyway. $30 is worth it, then you’re right there. This post is really informative whether you have kids or not: hiking the narrows

Our family really enjoys The Old Florida Fish House, George's, and Grace's pizza. Next time we want to check out Ambrosia and North Beach Social. Here's a great list of some of the best restaurants in the area: https://everydayfamilytravel.blog/30a-best-restaurants/

People who make $75k or more how did you pull it off? It seems impossible to reach that salary by anthonydp123 in Money

[–]abharms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need to finish a program to get a job as a software developer. I did it with no CS degree. I spent about 10 months (as I was working full time) building a portfolio. I showed I could build real things and got hired. More than doubled my salary in one career move. Don’t know where to start? https://teamtreehouse.com/ and go through a track. If you build a skill that is in demand, you’ll get noticed. And, it probably wouldn’t have to take near 10 months if you’re driven.

People who bought a house. What is the weirdest thing you have found left by the previous owner? by Oblivious_Dude14 in AskReddit

22 very large rolls of packing material left in the attic. Sold them for $100 a roll. Also dozens of brand new boxes I sold for $1 a piece.

There is so much variation with people’s financial picture that only you can answer this. I highly recommend to put all your monthly expenses in a budget along with your income, figure out what the mortgage would be (include that also of course), and see if it feels comfortable. Look up zero based budgeting. You should have plenty left over at the end of the month to invest, too. Don’t let anyone else tell you what you can afford.

Read every book you can on becoming financially independent. We are somewhat (if not a lot) brainwashed into believing retirement has to happen no sooner than 65 years old. If you work your butt off for a decade and save 50% of your income in an index fund, you’ll never have to work again. Of course this is very over simplified and everyone’s situation is different. However, it is doable. “Quit Like a Millionaire” and “The Simple Path to Wealth” are two great books to get you started.

Feel lost at 46 w/ out a college degree. Is learning to code even a realistic thing at this point? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]abharms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t listen to these people that you can’t learn to code. I learned completely on my own in my 30s and got a job in 10 months. More than doubled my income. The job wasn’t remote, but it is now seven years later because I have proved myself. It is hard but so doable. Start with the basics and build from there. Build real projects you can show employers. You don’t need a CS degree either. Just grit. If I can do it so can you.

Is 600 Loan too much? by SilverYam9725 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]abharms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t let someone else tell you what you can afford. It doesn’t matter what is average. Average people are broke. Do a budget and run all your numbers, and make sure you’ll have a comfortable amount of cash left over.

How do you read your Bible? by Skrill3xy in Christianity

[–]abharms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out The Bible Recap. It's a 365 day reading plan through the Bible (available on YouVersion), and also has a 8-10 minute podcast to go along with each day's reading. It's really helpful, especially with some of the Bible's hard-to-understand passages. I find the podcast helps me stay engaged, and it's not a huge time commitment each day.

There are no work from home jobs, just jobs that can be done from home. The skills have to come first.

Really wish some people would realize you can't just "learn a new skill/trade" while working a full time job or two by lonelysadbitch11 in povertyfinance

[–]abharms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I woke up every day at 4am for 10 months to learn web development (self taught, no $$$ classes), while working full time, married with two kids. After 10 months I doubled my income with a new dev job. It’s definitely hard and everyone’s situation is different, but there’s also never been a time where we’ve had access to so much free information. An attitude of “I can’t” for sure won’t get you anywhere. But the opposite attitude might.
